E46 High Beams not working & Car jerking

Hi there,

I recently got a late 2003 e46 330d auto and i must say this babe is sweet, powerful and yet very economical. However, my fun is being spoilt by two things.
1. High Beams Not working - Each time i switch on my high beams (push the turn indicator stalk away from the steering wheel), they dont come on. However, when i flash the high beams (pull the turn indicator stalk towards me) they work normally as they should even the blue light on my dash also comes on. But if i want the high beams to stay on they just dont. To make matters worse, they low beams are adjusted too high such that they dazzle cars in front of me. I have looked at the headlights and they dont seem to have had any mods. Could there be some mods that i am failing to identify. I have asked the previous owner and seems not to be bothered by it.

2. Car Jerking - When i am accelerating to between 65-70/80km/hr and with my speed gradually increasing, the car makes sharp jerks forward accompanied by a grinding-like sound (that i cant tell whether its coming from the engine/ gearbox) as if the car shifted into higher gear too early.
This is also shown by the bouncing up and down of the rev counter between 1200-1500/1700rpm. All this happens even when my foot is steady on the accelerator. I have searched on the net and some owners have said its caused by a worn out CCV while others say it could be that the gear oil and filter require replacement.
I know BMW says that its transmission oil is lifelong and doesnt require changing but again what is lifelong. One mechanic said the transmission filters tend to clog with dirt and thus prevent oil from reaching the gears
Once i pass 75/80km/hr the car has no issues at all.
Now i am no longer sure what the real cause is and want to avoid just changing parts haphazardly and using the Trial and Error method.:smashScreen:

Your assistance will be greatly appreciated

Look at the switch on the right. Does your car not have a switch which resembles this? Should be near the steering wheel

That switch with the one and the zero adjusts the height of the headlights.

Park you car facing a wall and check.

Oh yes it does but even after adjustment, they will still be too high. I am guessin probably the headligh were once taken out and not replaced properly. I will have to check later on today

Have you tried turning the high beams on when your low beams are on? Turn the knob on the right side of the steering wheel as far clock wise as it can go (second 'click') while the ignition is on or the car is running, then push the indicator stalk back. This should turn the high beams on.

It could be the stalk that is faulty for the brights. That is the switch lever for the brights. The headlights issue could be that the bulbs were installed upside down or not seated properly in the housing. If that is not the case manual adjustment will be needed.

The jerking issue could be the gearbox which I don't have any good news for you. That is very expensive.

First of hello all my first post lol

I just brought a 330d manual and mine was the stalk which I got a replacement from breakers for a tenner. Easy to replace but you do need to remove steering wheel and therefore airbag so disconnect battery.

I had a running issue and put in some two stroke oil and seems to have sorted my issue. Maybe worth a shot?

I must add I'm based in UK so price maybe different lol

Welcome to the forum bud. As soon as you said tenner I figured you were from the UK.
