E46 Gearbox problem

Hi

My 1999 E46 has 296K on the clock and i think the gearbox is starting to fail third gear slips out of place, second gear makes a weird whining noise but stays in place and sometimes fourth gear grinds, what could that be?

Do i need to take out the transmission to investigate?
