E46 coupe 1JZGTE swap project

Hi all,

Currently i have a sweet BMW E46 coupe on hand for quite sometime now. I bought this car right off from my father when he was planning to sell it off. It has been somewhat well kept in the family for the past 15 years. Aside from usual wear and tear items, this car does not give any gearbox and dreaded engine issues. Now the car is in needs of replacing the aged fuel pumps and MAF sensor then it should be nursed back to perfect health.

Right now i am planning to swap in a Toyota 1JZGTE VVTI single turbo sourced from Toyota Chaser or Soarer. Transmission of the car will be stock Chaser's or Soarer's A340E 4 speed automatic (my current one is ZF4 4 speeder).

My questions

1.) Do i need to buy the whole front cut of the car for other parts like cooling systems, brake systems since i mainly need engine, gearbox, ECU + TCU. I plan to upgrade my brake systems (Brake Servo + Master Cylinder from BMW330i. I got a deal for engine, gearbox, ECU + TCU and full set wiring for RM4k (bout 1K USD). Halfcut Chaser price is about RM5 to 7k (About 2k USD) depending on seller. Please advise.

2.) Do i need to modify my subframe? I don't know whether the gearbox oil sump (at the lowest part of 1JZ engine) will be blocked by my stock subframe.

3.) Custom engine mounts, can i use original Toyota engine mount and customise them to fit on E46 body?

4.) Long shaft and rear mounting, re-use stock BMW or has to change to Chaser's ?

Sorry for the long list of questions, i am trying to get some information on this project before i give myself the green light to proceed. I need to understand more of it so i can know what the mechanic is doing and can understand the processes.

Thank you all.

1.buy the one for RM4k
2.no I don't think so cause when you make your engine mounts you will be able to move the motor a little forwards or backwards
3.stock bmw mounts can be used
4.you can modify the BMW propshaft but you will need the input shaft from the toyota propsahaft into the gearbox
Afaik

i would try to get the R154 box or 6 speed bm box..they sell mounts for this conversion on Ebay as well...off the top of my head i think you'll need some work on the sump.

Perhaps let me clarify that in Malaysia, we always, i mean literally always stuck in massive traffics ! Driving a M/T car in Malaysia is going to kill your left leg. I do my leg days every week and yet, driving M/T car and stuck in traffic is seriously no fun. Furthermore, the E46 will also be driven by my lady, so an automatic is very logical.

Please don't swing your bat at me :ty:

AFAIK, the oil sump is right underneath the engine itself, checkout a youtuber named Ian's Garage. He actually modified the subframe to clear a path for the oil sump. However, i'm not sure all the 1JZ is designed to be like that.

Nice looking project. May i know is this owner trying to modify the oil sump to the rear of the car or fabricate mountings to mounting the engine in the engine bay?

Hi De@no, The build is going well! Just alot of work to do as we are stripping everything out of the car.

The oil sump was modified so we could lower the 1jz as the sump was hitting the steering rack.

The mountings were fabricated to mount up to the 1jz mounts using some of the existing mounts. Solid welds were done on 5mm plating so im sure it will be strong. Only time will tell

Fuel must be cheap in Malaysia if you can drive a jz daily and be stuck in such traffic? Good luck!:=):

For now its cheap, we would not know until the next fuel price hike ... Now our government implemented floating system to our fuel price, every month we need to watch for updates on fuel price. All of our stations are standardised in terms of fuel price.

Update here, i just replaced fuel pump and filter of the e46, now my buddies are hunting for 1JZ half cut in Japan. Wish me luck !

I see, that's what Ian's garage shared on his video too. The oil sump is making contact to the subframe and steering rack. For now i haven't acquired the engine. Will update here when i get it and checking out the chassis. Is there any significant difference in chassis design between the coupe body and sedan body of the e46 ?
