E46 330i weird whining noise

Hey guys,

Hope everyone had a superb christmas and new years.

This morning when I drove my car There was a very disturbing whining noise when driving into a bend / turn, the car didn't rev as it should, it went away after a while, then coming back to the house, I went through the bend again and then the noise started again, I popped the hood but at that time the noise was gone and I couldn't source the location of the noise.

The noise to best describe it sounds like power steering, when you turn the steering wheel completely to one side, the whining noise you hear.

So my thought it has something to do with power steering, it happened on about 80 kph while turning, but doesn't happen when turning into a driveway.

I checked the power steering fluid but not sure how far it should be topped up, its sitting about half of the bottle.


Any suggestions?

:idea: maybe one of the Belts running slightly loose could cause a screeching sound.

Fill the power steering fluid up to just short of the neck, start the car and cycle the steering from lock to lock while pausing for a few seconds at each end, it sounds like your oil supply surged as you went around the corner allowing some air in and causing the whine...

Or else there is a gremlin in your car...:roflol:

Btw, if you can see the power steering oil filter in the reservoir then our fluid is too low, the Cover/lid has a dipstick built into it that indicates full or empty...

To properly describe the sounds, its more like taking an RC car, and manualy rotating the wheels slowly, same noise.

Power steering fluid has a dipstick, it must fill as per dip stick, halfway in the bottle is very low.

When last was the power steering fluid changed?

Yep, the level should be in line with the second notch (upper notch) on the dipstick attached to the cap.

Could be the power Steering pump. Had the similar sound on my E36

So I filled the tank to the dipstick level, and the noise is gone. :thumbs:

That's good news! I still think it's worth flushing the power steering fluid at some point, really easy and worthwhile! :thumbs:

Thanks man, I will try to check for a DIY and rather do that just to be on the safe side.

my advice... Stop the car... tell her to get out... and the whining will stop immediately.
