E46 330d Turbo Dumping Sound

Hey Guys

So I decided to record my cars Turbo dumping sound, It only started doing this once I had the cats taken out and a down pipe put in :) I must admit I like this sound allot haha

As you will see it only happens at around 2100 - 2800 RPM when you let go of the throttle a little as its an auto, but its cool when your cruising around town slowly :)

Mine makes no such sound.

wonder if I can fit dump valve on the 320d??????

It sounds pretty cool I wont lie  have you removed your catalytic converters? and fitted a down pipe as this is when this sound became evident, before that it was very quite!

Please could a moderator move this thread to the showroom section as I don't think this is actually the right place to put this thread lol

:) That's definitely not a pully lol you can hear its air dumping when you drive it. I don't think Kish2604 330d would make the exact same sound if it was a pully.

As I said before, it got like this after I had it de-catted and a downpipe built, If I had to put a full straight exhaust 76mill from the turbo, it would sound like a rail gun when it dumps.

Maybe the 320d has no dump valve? this car definitely dumps no doubt about it. My buddies polo TDI did the same thing when he fitted a full exhaust.

Well I Have had my turbo checked by bmw and was told that the turbo is running very well, has no play and all is good in the hood! and if you just put your foot down on a diesel and change gears normally or let the auto do its job then you will never experience the turbo dumping excess pressure, but if you watch in the video I let go of the throttle at 2100 - 2800 rpm and it makes a loud dumping sound. its not a belt I can assure you no belt can make that sound.

My car is running very nicely and pulls very hard for a 330d without software! when I had a dyno run the car was making over 400nm atw.

Furthermore there is no play on the turbo shaft itself. The car is running very well. I think Andy1GP can comment on how smoothly this car drives and how nicely it pulls. :) I don't think this would be the case if something was wrong!

Besides I doubt Kish 330d would make the exact same sound if it was a problematic situation.

@ Osiris your car drives and sounds very healthy. From when I drove it compared to mine I would take yours home anyday. Netercol is also right, but whatever the explanation is for the sound emanating from there, it's good! Enjoy it

Thats a fun sound

1. Is the sound coming from underhood or the exhaust?

2. Can you replicate the sound when the car is stationary, revving pass 2000Rpms?

ok guys, I stripped my intercooler out my car today and cleaned it as it was completely clogged with grease, and the radiator behind it was even worse, I sprayed hose pipe at it and nothing came out the back...that's bad lol

I then proceeded to fill the intercooler with water and found that it had quite a bad leak in it, so I am ordering a new intercooler tomorrow!

I also found that the gaskets that go where the boost pipe attaches to the intercooler was gone on the one side and on the right side closest to the turbo it was broken in half.

Once I have fitted all the new goodies I will see if this dumping sound is still there, if it is then I would imagine it is the turbos actuator releasing excess pressure which is making this sound.

Glad you did the intercooler

Thanks allot, it was so easy to take it out, allot easier than I thought! But damn it was disgustingly dirty! Took me a couple hours to clean it! 3 x bottles of engine cleaner, 1 x 650ml large can of carburetor cleaner and one full bottle of clean green! only to find out the thing is leaking :thumbdo: but I probably would never have known it if I didn't!

On top of all this yesterday I replaced the expansion tank which took me 4 hours in total, I had to use a car jack to pop it out as its pressure fitted to the bottom!

Next weekend = Swirl flap removal!

Nice going Osiris, will be keen to hear if the cooler being damaged is the cause...

Thanks! Yea it will be very interesting if this is the cause, I wander if the boost leak is as bad as I think it is then the car should pull quite a bit better when its sorted! it looks like it was leaking from the intercooler itself and from the boost pipe itself due to the fact that there was no gasket and one half gasket! not to mention that you could see that where the gasket was broken there was a huge amount of gunk build up around it!

Sooo I went past the mechanic this morning, and the Turbo itself is 100% as I thought, but the boost leak is quite bad, It has 4 boost leaks in total which is what I thought, two in the intercooler itself, left boost pipe connecting onto the intercooler, and right pipe where it only had a half an O'ring, Should hopefully get a new intercooler tomorrow sometime, will let you guys know how this all goes as I am getting the intercooler via my warranty so they need to asses the current one first...

To be continued....
