Knock sensor codes or resistance all fine?

hmmm sorry mate, i dont know what happened to my original post...its blank! i had typed quite a long description of the problem. lemme start again:

basically, once i get close to 120kph theres a really hectic knocking/tapping noise that happens from the middle-rear of the car. it sounds like something is hitting something and has a rotational sound to it. as soon as i drop below 120, like around 110-100kph, the noise goes away.its almost like something is hitting a cover or something...its not a metallic noise though. and even if i let off the throttle completely the noise is still there until the speed drops to like 110 or so.

its the first time using this car at that speed since i had the following stuff done about 3 months ago:
- rear subframe/diff bushes replaced
- rear wheel bearings, springs and shocks
- whole front suspension - tied rods, control arms, caster bushing, shocks

the car is auto, and seems to rev okay in lower gear without any noises, problems or dash warning. i had serviced the car about 3 weeks ago, and oil levels are all okay. thanks!

Sounds like something to do with the prop shaft..

thanks! anything in particular on there that may cause this? im worried that if i take this car to someone... i will get ripped off without knowing much about potentially related causes.

I once had my Propshaft Guibo crack to an extent that there was a thick piece of rubber that broke and was sticking out which kept hitting the chassis or something as the prop rotated. sounded like what you describe...

Best would be to get the car up and start stripping, until you can see whats happening under there...

that might make sense. when yours went out, would it happen at certain speeds, or would happen all the time?

im hoping its something like a crack which expands when the propshaft spins fast...and touches the housing or something. i guess i'll have to put it on jack stands to see what the hell is up. my ride is on 190k, and the guibo hasnt ever been replaced. so could be that its on the way out.

It would happen at any speed but the sound got faster and louder as the speed increased...

WOW - 190k on the original Guibo... Get it up and have it checked. I wouldn't wanna drive the car knowing if that thing gives in, you may require a new prop shaft like i did on my previuous car. it was expensive... now i always change the Guibo every 5 years or 100 000km's.

shit, yeah im a bit stressed about that today. getting these spares in Zim (where i am ) is a mission. i have arranged to get it checked out tomorrow morning though...hopefully its just the guibo and nothing else major.

thanks for your help mate... really appreciated!!

just a bit of an update on this.

the guibo was okay.. wasnt that cracked, but changed it for a new meyle one anyway. the centre bearing was intact, but was feeling very "course" when spinning it with a finger...so changed that too. had the prop re-balanced, but found that the car making this same "noise" around 120kph or so.

eventually they found that the gearbox mounts were quite badly gone, so those have now been replaced...and i've been told they need to do another high speed test this afternoon to make sure everything is 100's.

hoping to fetch the car later today if its all square

Let us know the outcome

alrighty.....

@Omar HS, the guibo was cracked... but small cracks only... no pieces were dangling or flying off as i thought. have replaced it with a new one now, but that problem still happened.

from what we've seen, the gearbox may have been vibrating/knocking around because of the mounts being very worn at higher speeds. anything below 100km/h was fine, even hard accelerating.

will know for sure in a little while if that was the cause.

ok guys, confirmed...... gearbox mounting fixed it. went up to 180 km/h, no sweat.

car feels super smooth now with new guibo, centre bearing and balanced prop.

Glad you got sorted OP :=):

But you do know that it is a wish for some of us to reach that speed quickly and with no sweat :fencelook:

Glad you got it sorted. I would've suggested that you have your tyres inspected, nails and the like can produce odd sounds when stuck in your tyre at certain speeds.

My gearbox mounts (Manual) were completely torn in half, but I had no vibrations while driving... Perhaps the auto box is a lot more dependant on those mounts.

thanks guys, very chuffed that it wasnt anything serious.

@zound could be that auto's are more sensitive to worn out mounts.... the noise it made was scary AF. literally like something major was about to break. started off like a light knock, and got worse as speed increased.

@lizzard i'll mention that doing 180 km/h in a 16 year old car is quite scary..and that it was only for a few seconds at most. i usually wouldn't have pushed that hard, but it was on a emtpy, long road and the car seemed comfortable around those speeds. really just wanted to check if any vibrations happened through a range of speeds

all in all, i missed this car like crazy (has been parked for a few weeks till spares got in)
