E46 320D (Common Rail) Won't Start

Hi there guys, I finally did the deed and joined the forum.

I am wondering if anyone can help me with a slight problem I'm facing with this car.

I bought it as a non runner, for a good price, the previous owner said it's diesel pump packed up. So I had some mechanics take a look at it. The engine swings (not ceased) and there is diesel getting to the engine, but when they sprayed quick start and then tried to swing it still wouldn't fire.

So I then towed the car to a place that specializes in diesel engines and they did a compression test for me through the glow plugs. They said the readings were 12 bars, and they said it should at least be sitting at 19-20 bars...

I eventually towed the vehicle home, and did a diagnosis on it, and the codes said it was the DME/DDE.

Then I phoned some guys in Durban which bench test these boxes, and the guy there said "If the compression reading was low it makes no sense in getting a new or repaired DDE box, because if the engine won't fire with quick start you're wasting your time".

So guys, what do you advise I do now in trying to get it fixed. What's the best course of action to take from here?

Any advice and help will be greatly appreciated :)

A engine rebuild, but even then you will only see the damage once you open it. Would it not be better to maybe look at a 2nd motor as you dont know the full extend of the damage to the engine.

I can also confirm that the diesel pump under the backseat is working

So what the other guy meant was the high-pressure pump by the engine...
