E46 320D Boost Problem

Hi guys,

Would anyone recommend a good mechanic to look at my car and help me figure out what the issue is? I am pretty handy with a spanner but I am stumped now.

The frequently has no boost especially when you pull away gently from the traffic lights. If I floor it the boost comes in and it pulls pretty well though I think the boost comes in late.

I recently cleaned the EGR and manifold and checked the vacuum hoses. But the problem is still there.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

if you are quite sure its not vacuum related (leaking or perished hoses ) it can only be either the actuator not working correctly, or the vnt vanes sticking... sounds very much like a turbo control issue..

Waking up the thread again.. Trying to decide if I must just buy a new turbo or I can take it somewhere to have the vnt checked before I spend on a new turbo. The mileage now is 220000km and as far as I can see the turbo has never been changed before. Someone mentioned Stallion Turbo but I can see searching on this forum that they maybe not the best.

Got some swirl flap blanks so will be getting rid of the swirl flaps. Hoping to get an egr delete kit too. Decided to keep the tractor indefinitely. Do a lot of miles and it's comfy and sips little diesel too.

Firstly I'm no expert.

My problem was I had no boost and then boost came in late and hard.

I took it to my mech they popped the hood and spotted soot on the engine covers. They instantly told me boost leak and later my EGR seal was bad.

Maybe PM Gizmo he seems to be the go-to-guy in GP. Or do a forum search for mechs up in GP.

Have you had your pressure converter checked?

Had a similar problem with my E39 530d.

It's a boost leak, I've been experiencing something similar on my E90 320d, I'm sending it in today to have all the vacuum pipes changed, will report back

This

If it is not a vacuum leak, then it is likely the pressure converter. Swap it out with the one from the EGR (same part). If that does not work, test it or get a new one. If that does not work, test the intercooler. If that does not work, swap the turbo for a NEW OEM Garrett one from the importers.

Oh, and it could also be the MAF. So slot that in somewhere in the tree. Work from cheapest fix to most expensive.

Oh, and of course, get a diagnostic and check for faults and check fuel pressures.

Thanks for all the advice. Want to have the car sorted during the holidays.

I did have the vacuum pipes changed so will look at pressure convertor and also seals at egr etc. I have notice the engine is rather dirty with something that looks like an oily residue.

I will make a nice list and start to tackle the issues from cheapest to most expensive. Apart from the boost issues really enjoying the tractor. Put over 60000km on it in under a year.

Update on the car. I changed the manifold gaskets including the one with egr, the seals on boost pipes from turbo right through to inlet, cleaned the inlet, boost pipes and intercooler and finally changed all the vacuum hoses including the one that goes from vacuum pump and feeds all the hoses. Result car now pulls heavy and even steps out if power applied mid corner.

Noticed though when revs hit around 3800 upwards there is a pinking sound. Could that be injectors on the way out?

While I was at it I decided to change the right door widow mechanism at it was dying and in process disconnected airbag. Now the light is on. Is there anyway of resetting without using a diagnostic machine?

Thanks.

Guys, kak me out if this does not make sense..... With possible vacuum/boost leaks now fixed, the ECU is reading higher Co levels at the Co2 sensors, thus leaning the mixture, causing pinging? Would disconnecting the battery not reset the "old" measurements?

I am trying to learn the science.....:=):
