all been replaced but still wobbly/loose gear shifter, might be because the actual shifter was a 2nd hand one

The problem is whats called a spring detent. Its located in the gear box and basically centres the gearstick on the 3rd/4th plane. The spring and plunger seize in and it stops centring the gearstick-always on the 5th gear side. It is a gearbox out job to change what is basically a £2 part. But someone on here or dare i say it BMWLAND has managed it from underneath the car with the box installed with very flexible hands and a mirror...! Do a search for gearbox spring detent or words such as...

See above about "Spring Detent" and believe me its the cause. Seeing that you replaced most of the other parts already

:praise: to what iceman says above plus read this http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=900208

Had my mech do this and the box detent / dedents and it was life changing to be honest, he actually gave most of my parts back, but 12 and 15 are essential.

I have kept the left over parts for the 330i, but a word advice, get the motorsport / ZHP knob like Kabal's first, before deciding on the short shit lever. The knob is shorter and does a pretty good job of a SS.

If I do the other bits then would possibly do this as well

might also then do the "weighted shift rod" mod with lead wire as well

I already have the short shift lever fitted :)

yip he can replace it. its cheap. but it wont solve the problem completely

there is no way you can say for sure this is his problem... considering andrew has not mentioned any of the symptoms you mention... there is a good chance you are wrong...

the uprated bush i have solves a big culprit when it comes to loose gearshift and seeing as andrew has already changed most of the bushes it makes sense to finish the job and see if it solves the problem...

the gear lever sits between 3rd & 4th, but just has side to side movement & even up & down movement if you wiggle it

@ Andrew tell me exactly what the problem(s) with the lever are, is the lever loose is all gears and or neutral etc etc. I'd aslo need to know it what direction the lever is loose in each corresponding gear.

Yip I know you've swaped the shifter, was more of advice statement for other readers.

Did this job on my M3, and IMHO yes the last one is a propshaft disconnect, box out, this will be done when I do my clutch :yuck::yuck:

but there has been a vast improvement just by doing the bushes that have been done!

He has replaced most of the external parts already. By the sound of it he has alot of free play and its much more than what a bush will give you. The best is to replace all the parts and it wi be like a new box garunteed.
The evidance is all there. He has to decide what to do with all the info given.

pm me if you would like it sorted out, i get them sorted out perfectly resulting in about 5mm play on the gear knob when completed.
