Howdy,

So for those that do not know, I kinda like doing DIY's... and my M has got over 200k on the clock, so I am going to do a total fluid flush and other maintanance.

We start out with the oil discussion, TWS is farking expensive, we all know this, I have scanned the forum on this topic, and Mike seemed to have put his balls to the wall regarding the Liqui Moly GT1 10W60. Does anybody have any feedback on this.

I too would like to change every 7,500 or at least 10,000 so more affordable oil is in the order of the day.

Anybody have any contacts for this oil, my spares guys are going to quote me now, and I will just buy an OEM filter.

Should I do plugs as well, and if so, what plugs ?

I am not going to do an engine flush based on some reading that I have done, and that it could be a bad thing.

Now discs and pads I have sorted, I am just going to buy discs from the agents @ like 2250 something each, and I have ordered the EBC Yellowstuff pads. Dave from CBF will put them in for me along with a fluid flush. 5.1 race spec brake fluid is what he is going to be using (is this wise, I have done zero research)

Next tyres, I am battling with tyres. I really want to use my tyre guy as I know he knows how to use an alignment/balance machine. However he just cannot find me a matching set

2x245/40/18
2x275/35/18

I have gotten fair prices to date (around 10 to 11k) but I just simply cannot find tyres, and I am using the car daily, so its a safety factor. There are 3 differant types of tyres on the car, and one of them is smooth on the rear insde.. I am getting worried, and listening to this rain.

In the coming weeks, I will do radiator, gearbox and diff flushes, but more on that later.

So feedback if you will.
a. Liqui Moly Gt1 10w60 (Yes/No)
b. What brakefluid do I use (5.1 racing with the EBC Yellows)
c. Tyres...

b.

My advise would be not to use racing brake fluid unless you are racing and changing it very frequently. I did some research on the matter a while ago, but I cannot remember the particulars. I vaguely remember something about i thing DOT 5 in the lines of it handles water differently, in such a way that it is worse than DOT 4 if you don't change it very often. I think it rejects water, forming droplets of water, which will corrode parts quicker in spots.

a.

I'd go for the Liqui Moly.

c.

No comment ATM.

My opinions...

a. no thank you. Look for Castrol RS. Same exact oil as tws. I got my last oil change from a place in randburg.
b. no idea on the fluids but stay away from non-oem pads imo. I have EBC pads on the M5 and don't like them. They squeel and leave dust.
c. You can go for 285/30/18's in the rears as well.

With regards to tires look at hese guys: www.tyretraders.co.za They come to you and there prices are VERY decent, plus they do High Speed balancing on your car, at your premises.

RGM recommends Castrol Edge 10W60 both for the S62 and the S54b32.
Unfortunately it is a group A3/B4 base oil and therefore only semi synthetic(it is irrelevant that it says synthetic on the label cause it is not) Still good though.
As Biofreak stated, you can use 10W60 Castrol formula RS (Group A4/B4 base oil). It is fully synthetic and is just as good as TWS and you can get it at Midas. In fact, the RS was the fore runner of TWS. These 2 are the best.

If you want to change to Dot 5.1 you should make sure the system is free from the old stuff, since I haven’t seen Dot 5.1 that is not synthetic. It doesn’t want to mix with mineral brake fluid. Luckily the DOT 5.1 is silicon based and won’t eat up your paint, should you spill and it has a higher boiling point.

It is up to you, but the Silverstones I had on my e39 M5 made for very entertaining sideways driving with the nanny off. (they were rubbish ITO traction). Just stick to the std sizes 275/35/18 rear and 245/40/18 front. Autostyle had quite good prices on Pirellis when I enquired for those sizes last year.

Liquimoly seems to be doing alright in my M5.

Yellow stuff will eat your new discs quickly.

I have heard that hankook and kumho have been rated internationally as the worst tyres in the performance tyre segment. Continental and yokohama arent a bad option, but ideally you want to get michelins - very pricey.

a Liqui Moly Gt1 10w60,, should work, just the viscosity is very important on these engines!!! So try to stay close to the 10w60 mark.
Remamber the LS diff needs special oil.. Plain diff oil will ruin the clutches. Castrol SAF-XJ is what you need.

b Does the brakes work now???? Are you going to put her on a track? Stick to the BMW Dot4..
Regarding the pads... EBC yellow... They will stop the car, but they chew up discs!!! So how much are you saving on pads to sacrafice your discs? And those pads are noisy!!

c I have told you about my contact with good tyres...

I agree totally on the Michelins, Yoki's suck on a E39 with 18" rims (I have Advan sport on mine) tramlines like a complete bitch but they do grip extremly well, however I still can't wait for them to wear out so I can change. Unfortunately they seem to be lasting way longer than expected.

regarding tyres and brakes, I want the best available. There are other spares where I will compromise but not tyres and brakes.
Got a quote for Bridgestone RF, rear tyres were R4744 each
Brakes I will stick to OEM as well

Toyo T1R's are great tyres. Why would you put runflats on an E39? Runflats mean nothing unless they are on a wheel that has been designed for runflats...

Mamba, I am looking at the bridgestones, but out of principle I would not put a RF on my car... aint going to happen...

I dont even have runflats on my 7 series.

P1000, where were those prices from, do they have stock ?

:) but why not..;) what principle prevent you from driving to the nearest garage when in trouble instead of changing a tyre next to the freeway?

Becuase:
1. K@k handling
2. Heavy
3. Expensive
4. Will let your false teeth fall out with even the sight of a bump in the road
5. You wont find the size you are looking for without waiting 2 weeks for it. At least you can still drive anywhere with a spare

As above, but for me its more about the durability, the slightest bit of damage and the tyre is a writeoff, coupled with the fact that they are super expensive.......

P1000, shot for the lead, I did phone them, they are looking for stock, waiting for 2 other places to come back to me as well...

Cant believe its this hard to find tyres, im not even worried about price anymore, just somebody with stock....
