E39 M5 for sale at a dealer in JHB

Hey guys,

Does anybody know anything about the Silverstone Blue E39 M5 (VIN 0BJ11331) for sale at Ignition Auto in JHB. It's a 2001 facelift with 247,000km's and seems to be a nice original car in fair condition for its age and the R129,000 asking price. I have only seen pics and have not had the opportunity to view the car in person so hoping some other Fanatic has seen the vehicle.

Thanks

Andrew

Just had a look at the specs on bmwarchive.org for you and I see it's a 2000 model but is indeed a facelift. Maybe you can use this as a bargaining tool to get the price down a little more. Go to the site and enter the last 7 digits of the VIN and it shows all the options and standard features and also shows pictures of what the car looked like when specced per the build sheet.

Fo a car in a showroom, the presentation seem to let it down. It is like they are not even trying to hide the faults. Perhaps there are too many.

The engine bay is not very clean. This could be a bonus as any leaks will show themselves.

What are those marks? Polish left on the body or scratches?

Is the armrest dirty or has the color been rubbed off?

If you are keen on it, I would suggest paying a BMW specialist to have a good look at it. Don't fall for the line that the AA or whoever checked it out.

There is another 2001 M5 with a lot less mileage going for a lot more money in Benoni.

It might educate one to compare the two in the metal.

This car has been there for around 18mths - 2yrs. I had a look at it in the early stages of it being there and there are a few things with it as mentioned by others here. The car was filthy as per pictures which I thought was strange for a dealer and also when they started it there was a lot of engine rattle (these are prone to it when started up cold and depending on oil, wear and tear it should go away quickly) and this one had a very long period before it quietened down - but did not go away, suggesting it needs maintenance and replacement.

I think its had paint work in the past - front end bonnet/fender/bumper alignment not 100%, although I don't think a heavy bang. Also the general paint work its far from un-scathed, a lot of marks, they may very well polish out however. Also, the bonnet has been closed with something resting atop of the engine - causing an inside out dent.

I personally would stay away, unless you have lots of spare buckeroos and are prepared to refurbish it. Having an e39 M5 expert check it out would certainly be something I would do before anything.

The black one was a forum members car a while ago. Also been for sale at Dada's for over a year. The bonnet seems to have been resprayed since I last saw this car belonging to the member and it is not a fantastic job, very orange peal and "matt" almost - struggling to think of the correct term! :hammerhead:

Thanks guys for the replies .... seems to jibe with my first impressions. Negelected I can deal with .... as long as it has not been pulled through its arse.

I can swing my own spanners so i will tackle the VANOS rebuild myself with the Beisan kit. Probably a good time to change out the big end bearing shells which I will also do myself.

Its available to me with finance and a warranty so unless is been in a major prang, I am thinking its going to be my next project car/track day car. Will be nice to rescue what is fast becoming a very rare car.

Going to check it out next week

Cheers

Andrew

If you are considering this, be sure to take out some sort of aftermarket motorplan on it. Saved my dad's ass when he bought a 2000 Silverstone M5, 6months into ownership it started drinking oil and the rings collapsed on no7 cylinder! The costly rebuild by RGM was covered by the aftermarket motorplan, he sold the car soon after that in favour of a 2001 540i which has a spare wheel. The 540i is still going strong and my dad has no plans in replacing it.
