E36 Whine!!!

Finished my Auto to Manual Swap last night(2am this morning :fencelook and the car drives well but the box makes a whining noise. Sounds like the car is in reverse throughout all gears.

The spigot shaft bearing is new and so is the release bearing. The car does not struggle to go into gear.

Any Ideas? Need this sound to go away:bangdesk:

so I think I found what is wrong.This to help anyone else whos gearbox starts to whine - Its the countershaft bearing inside the box(thread below is exactly my case). I need a new gearbox again:bangdesk:

Wait before you do anything....drive it for a while. Mine did exactly the same and eventually became quiet after about 5kms.

Already removed and returned the box - currently waiting on the breaker to supply a replacement one:thumbdo:

The breaker refunded me and I bought a box off gumtree...
Just finished installing and its officially my second faulty gearbox. THIS IS BULLSHIT!!!:argh:

This one is even worse than the one before. It doesn't whine like the other one did but its almost impossible to find any gears. First thing I noticed about the box was that it was almost too clean to be a second hand part...I should have known then and there The shifter does not jump to its neutral position when you pop it out of fifth gear and when in neutral leans towards 5th. First gear, second gear...fuk'n all gears are impossibly hard to select. Theres no grinding of gears so the syncros seem fine but I know that this will be another expensive repair. :thumbdo:

Seller is adamant that the box was perfect with no issues yet his avoiding me now.

Anyway, we live and we learn right...STAY AWAY FROM GUMTREE!!!

As Bruce mentioned drive it a bit, but you havent had any luck with the replacements that you have had....sorry bud.

I just wanted to ask, did you ever consider putting new box oil in before installing? Keeping in mind these cars are close on 20+ yrs old, most likely that oil was never replaced, and if it stands, it may accumulate surface rust inside and this might cause undesirable issues.

Hope you come right - i got an e30 325 box spare, if all else fails...might need slight mods, but that one didnt have any issues as far as I can recall.

Hi Jay..thanks...both the boxes I bought was filled up with the recommended grade fresh oil before I installed. Im seriously considering a Getrag 260 because of the overdrive 5th but then i'll have to buy an m20 clutch kit right?
