e36 rear view mirror change

Hi guys, been struggling to program the transponder on my 1998 E36 keys for a while(Car unlocks and starts when using the key). Tried to program the manual way with no luck. Had it hooked up to a couple of diagnostic tools with no luck. Had the transponder tested and it works fine. I noticed today that my rear view mirror was replaced with a E46 mirror. Could this be the reason??? In short my question... Is a E46 mirror compatible with my E36. Your advise will be appreciated.

the e36 key works with your key, i think you have to programm it some how with the rear view mirror but im not sure how it works exactly but i know they connected somehow because the remote key wont work if the rear view mirror is not plugged in
