E36 M3 3.0 Ticking sound, please advise.

possibly idle control valve but thats a wild guess.

I have no idea how to even explain it, The accelerator cable gets stuck if I tap it when its stuck it reverts back to normal, and idles correctly, The car makes this Ticking sound the whole time, when I rev it it seems to go away but returns as the revs come down, but this is from within the car while driving it, it seems to pull quite well although it seems to stutter with power while reving up but once it gets to around 3000rpm and above it starts pulling hard, its got a brand new clutch.
I have only had the car for a day, I drove it that night home and noticed these problems, I was aware that it had a few problems and im willing to fix them, Apparently the Tensioner pully or what not is fonked and getting replaced, not sure if that would cause this noise? As soon as I get the car back I would like to send it to BMW to at least have it properly diagnosed as im sure they will be able to properly pick up the problems?
It isnt bent valves or something is it? and if it is something like that how much would BMW charge to redo the motor, rough estimate?

Awsome look forward to hearing what you have to say about these cars, if you have a nice healthy one and its stock, please take me for a spin in it at some point so I can feel how a healthy M Pulls. that would be awsome! cause im sure my car is a bit pup, maybe my vanos is Kaput!! However I do use my R6 to commute to work everyday and I ride it everywhere too, so I am very used to how a super bike pulls, maybe my view on Speed has been tainted by my bike?

That noise could very well be the tensioner pulley. I had this problem on my E39 M5, and nobody could diagnose it. Then one day someone did by simply running the motor and pouring some water over the various belts and pulleys, and the sound went away for a few minutes, and then returned. So he tightened up things, and no more noise. I am no mechanic, but was quite impressed with this cure that cost me only a couple of hundred Rand. Good luck!

Well I went past my Mechanic today and had my car diagnosed, Engine is sweet!, the noise is indeed the tensioner pulley, and the reason for my loss in power is my Vanos! apparently the vanos needs to be set! and while they diagnose that problem they can see what else is wrong with the Vanos, Seals will more than likely need to be replaced.
We did a test on the motor to check if it smoking at all, nothing, can rev it as you want and no smoke whatsoever comes out and sounds very healthy, I Feel much better right now, although Vanos isnt funny!

Sounds like hydraulic lifters to me.
Easy fix to calm them down , do a change of oil to Mobil1 0-40w

Q. What is the tapping noise near the top of my engine?
A. The tapping noise is often attributed to the hydraulic lifters in a low oil condition. Oil starvation also occurs during prolonged hard turns and is pronounced with an initial low oil state. Detailed oil starvation occurrences and solutions have been outlined below thanks to Edgar Bernard who spoke with Gregg Forde, chief mechanic of PTG (edited).
The US M3 engine will have oil starvation problems on left handed, high G corners at limited duration (roughly 10 seconds). It is a combination of oil starvation and oil foaming. A temporary remedy is to put 1 to 1-1/2 quarts of extra oil in the crankcase during track events. The E36 M3 engine does not experience the same problems as the E30 M3 engine when the oil is over filled. (The E30 M3 engine will blow or leak oil out of the rear engine seal if too much oil is used.) A low cost fix to the problem is to install the M3 Lightweight oil pan/pump kit. The kit has two pickup points in the oil pan and is indeed tricked. PTG has the kit for around $1600 with the gasket (should be under $100). The US M3 engine produces approximately four bars of oil pressure in the block and one bar in the head.

the US m3 has a different head to the euro M3 maybe the the Euro one has solid lifters?
