Beautiful car. A mate of mine had one of those 325i e36's. Lasted forever. I always only remember him reporting every few years that he had done oil seals and suspension bushes. Other than that motor never gave problems. Before he sold it, car had 480 000 +Km's :hammerhead:

Hi Karsh

Nice one bud. She looks really clean :bravo:

Myself and Nikhil have been making loads of progress.
Lots of late nights......happiness mixed with some swearing, burns, scratches, bleeding, oil stained hands.....

Work was moving along great until we hit a dead end.

So heres what has happened so far.

We removed the tappet cover that was leaking.
Found that it was opened before and silicone was used to seal again instead of a new tappet cover gasket. We cleaned off the old silicone and sent the tappet cover in for sandblasting.
Engine looked really good inside, but im sure it was cleaned before when it was opened.

There was lots of oil in the spark plugs due to the leak so we put in new ones.

The coil pack suppressors where brittle and breaking so we replaced those as well.

Complete new seals for the intake manifold while it was off as well.

Vanos line replaced

every grommet/washer was replaced with new items

New vacuum lines.

After sandblasting and heat resistant paint:

After we completed that there was still an oil leak.
So we decided to do the oil filter housing gasket.

Now this is where i hit a dead end and basically the car is now not running.

Before:

After a clean:

Oil Filter housing before:

Oil Filter housing After:
20191117_145612_4895615462.jpg

Now the problem starts.

I was getting a low pressure engine warning light when the car was at idle.
It started doing this after we put in new oil. 10w40

i put in a new pressure switch
Changed the oil filter 3 times.

The old oil was very thick and black when we drained it.
So im assuming there was very thick oil in there to mask an oil pressure issue.

After doing the Oil Filter housing gasket i now have no oil pressure at all.

We took the housing of Nikhils e36 which we know was working but we still sitting with the same issue.

at this point, our backs where dead....we where tired....we just could not think of what the issue might be or even attempt at opening up everything again.

The car is now at my mechanic to drop the sump and have a look if there is any engine damage due to the oil pressure and possibly tell us if the oil pump is now dead.

We was not in the mood to drop the sump while working on the floor.
Dropping the sump is abit of a mission lol.

So now i wait to hear what the problem is.

Okay so not a big update but some funny news.

Mechanic started checking the car up on Monday. Car had oil pressure.
Gave the engine a look over and found no issues.
Everything is 100%

He drove it around for 2 days and no oil light......All the noises i heard due to oil starve gone.

Nothing was done.....Not sure what happened.

Picked up the car yesterday and it sounds amazing.....Smooth....running like a beaut again.

Will keep an eye on it. But hopefully the gremlin is now gone.

@Karsh330d, looks like someone's prayers were answered.. :fencelook:

Could there have been a block somewhere that resolved itself? Interesting turn of events. Glad the car is back on the road!

definitely.....maybe my prayers was answered :biglol:

Honestly i have no idea hey. We drained the oil and put in correct spec.....we changed the oil filter 3 times. We removed and put back the OFH 3 times....

Eventually when the tappets started to get noisy from starting and switching off after everything we tried i just stopped everything and had it towed.

even the day the tow truck came i started it to move it out the garage quickly to line it up for the tow truck, there was no oil pressure.

I hope whatever it was does not come back or if it comes back it must fail completely so we know what the actual problem is.

only saw this thread now...nice Karsh...want to chat to Nikhil & yourself...will you be doing a budget boosting job (Volvo injectors etc.) or forged jobbie..also do you guys know of local top mount manis?

Nikhil

Honorary ///Member
@individj I want to do a fully forged bottom end but that depends on how much Karsh is willing to spend

I already have the following for his build
- Forged Molnar racing rods
-Bosch 750cc injectors
-Ally radiator
-19 row oil cooler
-600x300 2"thick intercooler

Shopping cart items

-Bearings either king or acl or oem
-ARP head and main studs
-Athena cut ring gasket (with spacer if we keep stock pistons)
- Supertech or Wiseco forged pistons ( if Karsh allows me to spend more money )
-Head will be stock just refreshed and maybe flowed
- Bosch 040 intank pump
- FPR ( whatever we find that's good quality and well priced)
- Excell wastegate and DV
-Gt30 turbo with .75AR exhaust ( most likely a vband mount in the interest of space)

Power goal for this car is a useable 300wkw / 400hp on pump fuel, while this can be done on stock internals it needs to be reliable and provide room for more power at a later stage hence the want for forged bits :cthulhu:

Top mount turbo manifold you can Speak to Bym fabrication or FullBoost performance or Juniors Welding Worx

aahhh those injectors aren't cheap...GT30 sounds good for space and power wanted..thanks for the mani info...would you guys consider cheap oem cam swops just cause...like NV intake for exhaust & M54 intake..sounds good hey im looking at about the same power max but on non forged mix n match OEM bottom end.

Karsh I had a similar issue with my 325iS some years ago, oil pressure light kept coming on. I installed an oil pressure gauge for peace of mind and the pressure was always fine.

Turns out the oil pressure sensors X2 were giving low voltage read outs due to the quality of the clips.

Glad it's sorted. Oil light is a worry

im supposed to pick up a white E36 today with black sport interior (no tears) and OEM Motorsport kit bar the front bumper which i need. I will let you know if the deal goes through. The dude is a bit of a dick and hate that im doing the deal with him but it'll make life a whole lot easier for me if it is successful

Update:

After a day or so of driving around the oil pressure light started acting up again at idle. But as soon as you touch the accelerator the light goes away.

Searching this issue kept poping up with oil pump wear or bearing wear. It was strange due to the fact that the mechanic gave a clean bill of health on the engine.

So long story short after lots of testing we found that a stupid o ring on the crank case ventilation line was worn out and wasnt providing a good seal on the tappet cover.

Bmw does not stock these anymore so i wrapped some insulation tape around the seal as a temp fix...

Drove the car for 2 months now daily and no pressure light :)

Drove to work the one morning in December. On my way out i lost brakes completely....

Managed to get it home and this was the cause:

20191203_182216_9873613697.jpg

Called up Deago @ABM and he got me a new valve.
Got some fuel line from goldwagen and made a new one

20191203_183130_7851363063.jpg

Brakes all good...better than before
Surprisingly enough the car was running much smoother and had abit more power. Take it that the pipe was leaking vacuum from the intake all this time.
