Had to send back the valve cover gasket because they sent a vanos one, will have the correct one sent by the end of the day or in an hour or two hopefully

Small update, Have not had much time to do any work but all things surrounding the head removal have been removed and unbolted, only thing left to do is drain oil and undo exhaust bolts + remove cam sprockets then the head can be pulled off the block

a Big 6 cyl and yet so much room for activities :smilebounce: why am I inside the engine bay you ask? well because I'm hopped up on flu medicine and if you have ever removed exhaust bolts from an e36 you should know this is the easiest and most comfortable place to do it from :roflol:

Thanks man, I'm sure I'll have it sorted by this weekend depending on when I get the new gaskets, these m50's are engineered so well it's such a breeze to work on, when you look at pre 2005 bmw's they're all pretty much just German legos

cam locking tool? bru I just close one eye and check the cams with a spirit level when I do the timing :skit: just kidding :smilebounce: midas should stock them, I'm sure even autozone do or adendorff

So I was right to suspect the headgasket as an issue, everything else looks good it was just two bubbles in the headgasket causing it not so seal correctly, engine will be back together tonight :thumbs:

Nice one bud! i suggest getting some superfine sandpaper and lightly sanding the the block and head mating surfaces

Thought I would shine up the engine bay a bit before I went to work,
Still going to do a complete detail once all the bits and bobs are back in place

So last night was interesting..
I went out for some spirited driving when a series of unfortunate events struck,
first the right fog light fell out and I drove over it shattering it into a million pieces.. :hammerhead:
and then while I was hauling a$$ through the back roads the temperature suddenly jumps into the red after keeping perfect temprature for the whole drive before this, car starts cutting out I get very confused, stopped and got out to inspect, didnt find anything but the whole engine bay was hot and I mean HOT.
Luckily I was up the road from my house and was able to coast all the way home with the engine off, waited for her to cool down, and saw a bone dry coolant reservoir.. to my shock as I had topped up and bled it right before going out, threw water in and all I heard was it pissing out violently, thought the radiotor was shot but then found that the joining piece for the water bottle hose to the engine had broken

luckily I got one from a bmw chop shop up the road today so we'll be good to go again by tonight

No I don't think so, after cooling down it seemed everything was as it should be, started up perfectly this morning too, caught quick.. idle was perfect too, no smoke so I think all is well. I was very worried about the head getting damaged but I'm sure I shut down before anything drastic could happen

There is much more positivity than negativity though, this car moves like a bat out of hell, the work I put into this engine definitely paid off last night, it runs so perfectly, smoothly and strong, and at the top she screams!! gave me goose bumps the whole time
