Hi Guys!
This is exciting... for me ..

Sooo I have a new project , another car to mess about with for the holidays or for whatever time it takes me to fix it :)

The car in question belongs to a very close friend and after he had seen what I did to my aunts E46 Ti , he begged me to help him with his car ( well his been begging me for help before that but it was in a much better condition then haha) . So anyway after months of begging I have finally conceded to his request .

The car is a 2003 E46 320i Automatic M-Sport Individual . It has a very nice blue color , Estoral blue I think its called . Unfortunately , It is in all sense of the word a complete mess . Im going to have to figure out this car piece by piece as its in terrible condition , inside and out as well as mechanically . Its been sitting parked off for about a year under a car port, and kind of slowly dying . He did start it up occasionally .

Im really hoping you guys could help me out with this one on the mechanical side .

It runs very poorly , stumbles a lot , makes strange noises from the engine bay , the power steering fluid leaks all over the place, Once filled it does work well , but then leaks out everywhere , ( I will try and find the leak) but it does drive , I drove it from his home to my home .

Washed it as it was covered in dust and leaves, thereafter I proceeded to read the Engine Fault codes with INPA .

The fault codes that I managed to pull out state

1) 241 Burning Fail Cylinder 4
2) 239 Burning Fail Cylinder 2
3) 2 Ignition Zyl . 4
4) 29 Ignition Zyl. 1
5) 1 Ignition Zyl. 2
6) 8 Air Flow meter
7) 90 TEG_UP_1
8) 91 TEG_UP_2
9) 93 TEG_DOWN_2
10) 63 Signal CAN environment temperature
11) 52 Exhaust Flap

What do all these codes mean? Where should I even start?

All help would be greatly appreciated! Will post up a few pictures of my progress as soon as I can! :)

Good luck... Hope it all goes well.

IMO,
To start off, a new set of plugs, oil and filters. Maybe new coils on all 6.

Then read codes again.

And yes

we want to see some pics...... NOW!

Good Luck with this Project...

I would start by clearing all those codes then read it again.
See what Pops back up.

Since its been standing for a While, do the usual (as per Above), Oil change, oil filter, Spark plugs, fuel Filter...

Then See how she goes...
" It runs very poorly , stumbles a lot" , Explain this??? misfires??

Thanks so much guys! This afternoon , If it does not rain , I plan on jacking the car up , placing it on stands , removing the engine covers and giving it a good wash to find those power steering leaks . It leaks like an open tap and the steering is soo difficult to turn when the fluid is gone .

The engine behaves in a strange manor , on start up it sort of hesitates on idle, like its hunting for revs , Kind of like what an engine would do if it had an air leak somewhere .It has this extremely loud buzzing sound coming from somewhere , like a strange buzzing noise . When driving it seems to drive fine , but lacks power ( But not all that much) and has terrible fuel economy . It also smokes a bit on idle ( kind of like what a car with worn valve stem seals smokes like . I can also smell a lot of unburnt fuel on idle coming from the engine bay .

Opened the oil cap and it seems so crummy and grimy . I may need to flush the engine ?

The last oil change that this car had was in 2016 at SMG . Since then , its probably only had about 1000kms done on it . The oil level is low though. So it must have a leak somewhere.

Pour half liter of diesel in the engine oil.
Run for 15min at idle or low revs.

Drain oil + new oil and filters.

New fuel filter + injector cleaner.

Change plugs.

Clear codes.

I don't suggest hosing the engine down until you quite sure water wont make its way into critical places.

Deal with the power steering later. Engine first. I suspect theres very very very high amounts of sludge in the motor. Pistons rings should be filled with sludge and gunk.

I found My Airleaks with the Smoke test using a Rubber glove, rubber tube and a Vape.. :bravo:

What color is the Smoke?? white?? bluish?

I used Liqui-Moly engine Flush on my 325i Engine... Worked wonders in freeing up the Stuck Piston rings (oil was bypassing the rings and Burning)

Common thing that causes high oil consumption and Oil burning is the CCV ( Crank Case valve )... Common failing point on these motors.

Try to remove the Oil cap while the car is idle. If its easy with a little bit of vaccum, you should be ok. If you struggle to get it off, Its the CCV thats F'ed...

but start somewhere... Do the usual and the take it from there.

Oh oh , I just hosed down the engine , and undercarriage , :sorry: I litrilly just walked back into the house and parked the car off . The amount of oil a gunk that came off this car turned my driveway into a rainbow .

Color of the smoke is bluish , I checked the engine oil , theirs no oil and water mixing . I do believe this engine is seriously gunked up . Not to the point that its a wreak but very gunked up .

I haven't removed the oil cap , but yesterday , while at the garage , I did remove the oil level stick , and when ever I did that I could hear a big suction sort of woosh .

Rubber glove, rubber tube and a Vape, How did you do that ?

Somebody at the dealership did suggest I do that as well to flush clean the engine , using diesel . Liqui-Moly engine Flush sounds good as well .

While cleaning under the car , I removed all the panels including the large metal shield . The plastic one was broken , there was probably 1/3 of it left .

My N42 E46 does not have this panel , how important is it on the 6 cylinder cars? I noticed that this part only came on the 6 cylinder models

As promised , this is the car :) It may look ok in the pics but up close its ugh a mess . This is the pic of the engine bay before I washed it . These are pictures of the car , after I washed the body to see what I was dealing with , Didn't take a pic after I washed the engine bay . Will take one after its working . I couldn't work on it in this filthy state lol

The exterior doesn't look bad at all,
The engine bay seems complete too.

All the best in fixing it, these are lovely cars with exceptional handling.

Have you thought of putting in a 330i motor in ?

Looks beautiful in the pics! Lol...

But that engine bay does look kind of uhm... dirty...

:fencelook:

Wishing you well with this. Keen to see the progress!

Good luck man!

So I found the power steering leak , looks like its coming from the right side of the power steering rack , both sides of the rack boots at torn as well .

What should I do? Is this a DIY or do I have to take it somewhere to have the rack rebuilt ? Or resealed?

I cleared all the codes . Started up the car , but didn't drive it . The only code that stayed was that of the Air flow meter . I suspect if I do drive it other codes might pop up but im not sure .

So what I believe needs or may need is as follows

1) Replace Spark plugs
2) Replace CCV
3) Replace Coils
4) Replace Oil and Oil Filter ( remove the sludge first)
5) Replace air filter
6) Replace fuel filter and drop in a fuel system cleaner
8) Replace of have the Power steering rack replaced

What concerns me is the odd noise it makes , like a buzzing noise or more like a door creaking noise from the engine bay with the engine running . I have no idea what that could be .

The power steering can be a DIY project, I just went through this on a Scooby but it's quite involved and you need to be extremely careful not to damage the finish on the inside of the rack.

A repair kit should be available, but proceed with caution. There are many places that offer the service if you don't want to get into it.

As for the noise, try to isolate it. There's only so many moving parts and if you could get an idea of the source then looking at a diagram of that area on RealOem or such might point you in the right direction.
