E36 323i trouble

Hi guys.

Just abit of advice needed.

My friend has a 1998 323i e36 auto. The other day the car refused to start, prior to it being switched off that night, it was running perfectly. When swinging, it will almost start (i.e coughing), but wont go all the way. 2 days later we try to start it again, lo and behold, it bursts into a perfect idle. Switch it off, and start it again, perfect. We leave it to idle for about 5 minutes, and then the car starts hunting at idle, but each time its hunting (between 800 r/min and 450 r/min) there is a hissing/wooshing noise coming from the intake, kind of like the noise you would get if you turn the motor by hand. There is also a very intermittent misfire at low revs, that clears up at high revs. Not to long after that, there was a loose, knocking noise coming from within the tappet cover. By chance i decided to look at the oil cap, there was a grey mixture, as if oil and water were mixing, but it was a very thin hard layer. When i pulled out the dipstick, the grey mixture was there as well, but only after the full mark on the dipstick. Below that was normal oil.

Any ideas/ advice gents?

I had this problem on my e36 316i, turned out to be an airhose(no idea what it's function is) that had come loose just under the MAF box. I put a cable tie on and has been perfect for the last 3 months...

Check for oil leaking past tappet cover gasket into spark plug holes . This can cause misfire . Check radiator cap - is water oily ? Does car get hot ? ( combustion gas gets past leaking head gasket and heats up water ) Inlet manifold area air leak ?
