The vanos non performance is not only due to the rattle which one can hear it is primarily due to the failure of the internal seals which activate the movement of the inlet camshaft.
The vanos oil pump generates 100bar of pressure and that pressure is controlled by a combination of seals which fail and the vanos becomes "de activated".
The effect of the failure is lack of torque between 2000rpm and 5000rpm.
In the case of the s50b30 and s50b32 engines when the vanos is in need of attention the car is noisy and has a diesel like rhythm......maybe 444YYY can explain it a bit better as we did his unit two or three times and we eventually had to get a new body to resolve the issue it presented.
All the same that car is neat, drive it in good health
