That is one of the best engines BMW ever made - its virtually indestructible - I have seen first hand the abuse that that engine can take as a friend of mine has one as a daily driver and there is not a day that goes by where that car is not redlined, drifted or otherwise hammered :) nearly 400,000kms and still strong as an ox.

The body on the other hand is suffering particularly under the rear seat - there is now a multitude of fatigue cracks that are evident and one of the rear shock mounts has torn out and had to be replaced.

Its an epic car and huge fun to drive

Thanks Andrew. I do love this car :)

Just a quick question - I thought the E36 M3 lightweight was a North American only car that was released in 1995?

It was white, had the vinyl sticker across the bonnet / fender and boor with rear quarter panel, LTW rear wing, LTW front spoiler that was adjustable, interior carbon fibre inserts along with dark cloth trim and red stitching and manual seats. There was also no aircon, radio, toolkit and no speed limiter.

The final drive was also shortened, less sound insulation material, aluminium doors, a shock tower brace up front and stiffer springs. And from what I've seen, also has BMW Motorsport International emblems on the door mouldings and sills.

Also, the oil pan and dual pickup oil pumps on these were an option. Along with cross-drilled brakes, adjustable camber plates, full height adjustable coil overs and an X Brace.

The car was 136 kg lighter than a normal E36 M3, or 300 lb.

Lol... Fuzz you are a purist bud :clapper:

Regarding lightweight versions locally... This red one was one of the first batch of E36 M3 3.0 litres.

What I have read is that these were homologation specials. And also brought in so that these could be sold locally, so that BMW could race them in group N racing too. (Cars had to be available in the SA market in order to enter Group N racing)

Possibly why these cars were specced without sunroof and cloth seat, no headrests etc.

Purist indeed!

But there is a difference after all... In summary, these are just low-spec'ed local versions - I wouldn't go as far as labelling them as lightweight by any accord. They still have A/C, full tool sets, radio, and all the other creature comforts.

People forget that BMW (and most other manufacturers that import cars to our shores) often spec our local cars quite decently with leather etc as "standard", whilst in the US and Europe Cloth seats are considered "standard"

Gents, let's be clear I never referred to the old boy as a CSL 😀 The lightweight really just refers to the early ones brought in for stannic group N as described above. By SA standards it's basically a poverty spec but quite rare.
