E34 m60b30 using oil

Hi all,

So I had my oil changed about 1000kms ago, was filled up to the max mark.

Now today my engine oil message came up on my dash, then when I got home, I checked it and it's at the min mark?!?

I don't notice any oil anywhere where I park, so don't think it's a leak, and sometimes after I've been driving for a while or spirited driving, it smells a bit like "oily" oil like oil is being burnt up.

Any ideas of what this could be?
Is this usual for m60's?
Car is on 301000kms

E34 530i 1995

Please advise

Hi

15w40 liqui moly

@ricky318i
My mechanic did the service, and I am sure he did so,
Like I mentioned when I check the cars oil about 2 weeks ago it was almost full

I popped past my mechanic quickly today and he checked it out briefly and topped up the oil asking me to monitor it, said it could very likely be the breather valve,
You think that could be the case?

Hi, don't know if you got the car sorted but a torn breather valve will cause a rough idle and most likely occasional smoke on start up as oil is drawn into intake manifold. On a m60 i would use a full synthetic oil as they run reasonably hot, don't know if you used that 15w40 oil before?

I'm not sure what oil was in before so I can't say, the 15w40 is just what I have been using and recommended by my mechanic since I've owned the car,
I though an older car, older "worn in" engine should use a thicker oil i.e 15w40?

Waiting for my mechanic to open next week to sort out the breather,

I've also got a tappet sort of sound now as well on startup and until the engine is warm, maybe this is also because of the thicker oil,

Maybe I will try a 10w40 or 5w40 like Peter suggested
What car are you putting your 5w40 in @peter@aew?

15w40 is not a good idea in my honest opinion. Allot more effort and time is require by your oil pump to pump that thick oil up to all the necessary components on start up which is where most of the wear takes place.

This might also explain the tappet sound your now hearing...

I would do a full proper oil flush if I were you, you can view my thread on how I did that here:

its towards the end of the thread where I show how I did it.
