E34 M5 - Intrument cluster illumination problem

I’ve removed my instrument cluster on the M5 E34 to replace blown bulbs, now the illumination does not work at all, but the new bulbs and all other bulbs are working fine.
It’s the cluster and the centre console lighting that does not come on when I switch on the park or drive lights. Checked the fuses and switch and all are fine.
What can be the problem?

All I can think of is the connector plugs at the back got some dirt in them.

Remove them again, check for any bent pins, clean and try again. Also open/close the clamshell cluster a few times.
