Not too sure, Dad and I investigated a bit, theories are either the collet failed holding the valve and all hell broke loose, it does seem like metal fatigue. Upon closer inspection we found slightly different shaded pieces in the valve stem. Which tells us the there could have been small fractures leading up to the failure.

I"m just lucky that it didn't happen while charging at 6-7000rpm. It was coasting in 4th at 120-130. I actually have the footage where we were cruising and I told my mom the car is dead, just like that.

Oh well. Want to send the head off asap and get in touch with prev owner to source another piston.

In 4th around 3000rpm.

It's probe pop-up pistons. Imported along with the dart walter heads I believe. Not sure if they're around locally.

Damn Andy, a bit of bad luck buddy. Take your time with it. I dont mind coming round if you need some help, even tho I dont have much mechanical knowledge, but I can lift quite a bit.

Just be sure to check the rod for damage as well, or just replace while you are changing the piston as well, just to be sure.

Can this be seen with the eye though?

Well it would depend about the extent of the damage, reason why I would just replace it, just to be sure....you never know if it has a small crack or something, and a broken rod later on will mean goodbye engine.

Head looks ok , seat damage repairable . Piston looks as if it is readyfor recycling . It may be better to take the heads off and replace all the valves . Can you accurately measure their lengths to check for stretching , check them for colouration showing wear or hot spots .Check big ends for wear .
Are they stainless steel ?
Andy good luck , I hope your year starts improving car wise :thumbs:

Those are high compression pistons. No std :nonono:
3 places in JHB that deals with any type of American V8 spares (std or performance parts) and their prices are fair:

RS Performance - 011 334 4342 - Nico
US Connection - 011 885 3223 - George
V8 shoppe - 011 869 5153 - Swannie

Andy - let oom Johan Ter Burg have a look at the piston and give his opinion before you replace.
It is difficult to judge from the pics, but i have seen pistons hammered really bad, and still doing duty afterwards. If it is not cracked and the ring glands are not squashed, it can be re used

I know it's been a while and I'm not home to stay on top of things, but the head has been repaired. And Johan advised me to get the valves and springs from US connection and take it to them to fit.

Slow progress but none the less. Pricing quite reasonable so far as well. I'm seriously suffering from V8 withdrawal.

Still a bit of a mountain to climb before she's running again, but the light is starting to shine at the end of the tunnel...

hope you get her sorted out soon bro!

no offence intended but this is why i went with the motor i have. if it drops a valve or throws a rod through the block i take it out, chuck it in the corner and put another 1 in and the fun starts all over again. for R5k...

Yes I remember us chatting about it and I totally agree. In fact once this one is running again, if it does give me hassles in future I'll call you and we maybe convert this one to a lexus too? Might take some more work, but if we could make the box fit and do the wiring harness then she'll be a more budget-able keeper. And more economical :roflol:
