I'm looking at purchasing an e30 (possible 325)

What is the most effortless engine swap I can do? An e36 M3 just drop in?

That depends on your definition of standard....if you feel that the changes BMW made to the the m20 for the iS' or Alpina for their cars as standard, then yes you do get standard m20's in the 200+HP range.

Please tell me where you are going to get this 325i in a good condition, or for that matter a 325iS or Alpina engine, because I am now only looking for an E30 316i or 318i in good condition, never mind a 325i.

An E36 M3 is not a straight drop-in some modifications will be needed to make it work and this will include the entire drive train: gearbox, prop shaft, differential and side shafts.

haha, yeah I'm getting a poor condition 318, stripping it and rebuilding it up.

easier than trying to find a legit 325is :/

Having personally done a couple of engine swaps in an e30 myself, some for customers and 2 on my personal car, I would suggest going the turbo route, multivalve turbo FTW.

I'm not too keen on a turbo, feels unnatural.

Possible to use a small enough one to keep turbo lag unnoticeable?

I feel like you should go and read about the turbo conversions done using the stock M20B25. So many resources to look up and videos (with sound) to watch haha!!
