A guy has a e30 325i for sale and claims motor is 2.7 litre . Can it be identified from the engine number ? My plastic bumper 325i had 2.5 and 2.7 stamped on the exhaust side of the head . As the 2.7 had the same bore but longer stroke it can't be seen from outside . Thanks .

yes you should be able to identify the motor from the number. most if not all M20 325i heads are stamped 2.5/2.7 so that does not really help. be careful of these people. 2.7 is not necessarily better as the 525e had the 2.7 "economy" engine. crap head etc. all thats nice is the crank.

realoem should help here otherwise there are a few E30 gurus here.

Thanks , I would expect a 525e bottom end with a 325i head to have good torque and power . would like a 328i crank....later .

i also thought it would be good but was told that the pistons are rubbish and so compression goes out the window. also not too sure how that block likes stroking as I know the 323 and 320 blocks dont take too kindly to it.

Doesn't mean because the Head is stamped 2.7 that its a 2.7L motor.. My Bru's 89' 325i coupe says 2.5. my previous 91' 325i said 2.7 but it was a 2.5L.

also if it was stroked by the owner to 2.7L, you wouldn't even notice.
