Sorry for the "Necro Post" - My e30 1989 318i now totally refuses to start. Can the main relay be problematic causing it not to start at all? It seems to me as if there is no spark.

How long does an ignition coil last, and will a faulty ignition coil cause intermittent starting problems, or does it just fail at once and that's it, no more starting? How do I test the coil, I really do not want to electrocute myself doing it.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Tap the bottom of the coil with the soft end of your ratchet arm... violently.

If they coil overheats it can short against itself... tapping breaks it loose.

This happened to me 2 times in a beetle... never the bmw though.

What are the symptoms? are your injectors working?

Pull a wire and plug in amy old sparkplug and see if you get spark.

The main relay only controls the fuel pump. On the M10 anyways.

Have you had big rain? Mine leaks close to the ecu... well used to.

Ps testing coil... main plugwire(coil to dizzy)... lay it agains an earth and crank over... you will see it spark if the coil is ok.

Thats pull it off the dizzy and lay it over an earth...
