Fantastic build of an awesome car wow!
As for the wheels choice IMO it doesn't need to period but something that suits the cars looks and gives you the handling you after.

My personal preference would be in the following order:

original style 5
Style 21
Style 37

any of these with the best possible tyres should offer incredible handling and feel. I have a suspicion that the style 21s with Michelin PS4 or PSS 235/40/17 tyres would be the best ito handling and feel

Large wheels with extremely low profile tyres actually impacts handling negatively with the older design suspensions

Agree.
Style 37, HAWT:

But hell, 2 of those are some of the rarest wheels ever.

I think the offset is making the wheels look smaller as they are tucked in. Perhaps play around with the option of a decent set of spacers to get the wheels out a bit. Once the tyres are a bit more flush with the fender it should look much better.

No doubt the M parallels are the winner!

Basically any BMW you fit them to takes the car from meh to baller status.

Style 65 E39 M5 wheel looks great too.

Anything bigger than 17" on an e28 looks cartoonish, and that is the reason I wont fit the M-par wheel to it. But its not my car and that is simply my opinion.

Or something more age appropriate, Alpinas:

I actually think this is the best suggestion so far, M-parallels notwithstanding as they are not feasible. Im not sure what size are in the pics, but they look big enough to be aggressive but not too big in my opinion, and also period-appropriate.
