Durban teen killed in 'high-speed' N2 crash

Very sad. RIP.

I can't judge as I too used to push the limits at that age. As you mature, most tend to become more aware of the limits and are able to resist the urge to push past them.

I've said it once and I will say it again, high powered BMWs are tricky to handle at the limit. Not a car I would recommend to a youngster.

In that case the car can only be sold to the registered driver. I can see how this could be a mooerse inconvenience for some, but in the case of parents buying rockets for their teens, it should be controlled for the sake of the kid's life imo.

Something like:
18yrs=100bhp
21yrs=150bhp
25yrs=200bhp
30+=unlimited, etc...

At 18 most know f**k all about cars, physics, handling, grip levels, etc. Just for their own safety, not becoming a nanny state.

Again I say high performance cars should have an age limit or the buyer must have gone through a performance driving course. At 18 I was 'racing' my 1400 Uno, stupid - yes, but imagine if I had 300bhp to play with, I'd too be dead.
My last 2 years of school, 1 friend got gifted a 325is, another friend got gifted a Ford Telstar TX 5. Both we involved in MASSIVE accidents because they were reckless. Both are now living with metal hips.

Mandatory advanced driving course for any kid that is either a) going to be driving something powerful, or b) driving a taxi

Very sad... i also wondered about the brain damage, maybe he wasnt wearing a seatbelt. Just sad...

Drivers Airbag wouldn't have gone off if he didn't.

Also don't be fooled by those crash test dummy videos. Air bags DO NOT feel like pillows :hammerhead:

It's very easy receive head trauma by an airbag especially if your head is near it BEFORE it fully deploys, knocking you out in the process.

Oh ok, i know alot of people who clip their seatbelts in and then sit on top of it, we would never know for sure what happened here, but that is just dumb, my seatbelt saved my life in 2010, thats why even if i am just driving around my area, i make sure my seatbelt is on.

At 18 my son will have 3 options:

-walking
-public transport
-a lift

He might not like it but at least he'll be alive enough not to like it.

Most 18 year olds have a hard enough time processing what to have for breakfast.

Why the hell would you give one anything with more than 100hp.

I honestly believe that no matter how wealthy you are and what sports car you can afford, an 18 year old should get a tazz/golf/polo/yaris etc...

If budget allows, style it nicely (rims, sound, drop etc...)

That is it.

My nephew will be driving in a few years, and i already warned him that he must not expect an M3 or anything like that for his first car, it will be one of the above, that is it, i am really against youngsters having really fast cars, this article proves why.

An example from a foreign land: My wife is from Latvia. Before she could book her driving test she had to complete 100hrs driver training and 5hrs skidpan and 10hrs snow/ice driving. That means a person wanting a licence has to basically wait and practice for 1 year before doing the test. And the test is a proper test, which she failed 3 times before being granted permission to hold a motor vehicle licence.

Saw this on Facebook. Pretty hectic, be safe out there guys. May his soul rest in peace.

An eighteen year old boy has lost his life in a high speed motor vehicle collision on the off ramp to the M19 from the N2, south bound,late Wednesday night.

Crisis Medical paramedics arrived on scene shortly after 22h00 to find the wreckage of a BMW occupying the width of the roadway with the driver still in the vehicle.

Specialized rescue tools were needed to cut the man free and on closer examination it was discovered that he had unfortunately suffered a fatally traumatic brain injury and there was nothing paramedics could do to assist him, he was declared deceased on scene.

The facts pertaining to the incident are unclear however eyewitness accounts allege the driver lost control of the vehicle at high speed colliding with the Armco-barriers before spinning several times and colliding with the concrete support of the overhead bridge.

The South African Police Services were in attendance and the incident is under investigation.

The roadway remained closed well into the early hours of Thursday morning while emergency services worked to clear the scene.

Gonna ask something stupid, but I wonder whether the poor lad had a safety belt on, can't see immediate intrusions into the cabin?. ..sad, isn't this a repost?

I was thinking the same things... IF he did by the looks of it I think he could have been alive, yes?

Sad though...RIP

Car in 1 piece.
Airbags deployed.
Fatal brain injury.
How?

You can suffer a fatal brain injury from relatively mundane incidents... and this is far more severe and at far higher speed than eg: a fall down the stairs. In the case of this crash someone else mentioned Diffuse Axonal Injury (here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diffuse_axonal_injury). Conversely, people have walked away from crashes that started from speeds north of 200km/h...

I like this idea.... my first car was older than me at the time but still had 82kW (minus a couple of escaped horses I'm sure) on tap. Had one scary near disaster whilst being stupid that gave me the fright of my life and probably aged me 5 years in terms of driving defensively. Also went for an advanced driving course shortly afterwards. Imagine if I had 3x that power whilst still learning the physics of driving?

As an aside, why is this tragedy making everyone quote power in bhp? It's making my head hurt :hammerhead:
