Drivetrain Error @ 89000 km

Hi there.

disclaimer: I know almost 0% of cars mechanically... :hammerhead:

I need some advice on my BMW F20 i116 "2013; for the past 6 months been getting Drivetrain - continue journey at a moderate speed. Full performance not available error about 5 times; the last week it happened twice.

If the car is switched off the error disappears; so I just ignored it as it did not happen often.

Was at two different independent BMW mechanic.

The first one said its the camshaft that needs to be fixed @ about R16k ( only done diagnostics; did not open bonnet & he cleared the errors )
The second time the error popped up I took it to the second mechanic and he said its the sensor @ not more than 3k ( at least he checked around the engine bay)

I have attached the diagnostics report of the two mechanics. Any other possibilities of what could be wrong?

Thanks for reading:smilebounce:

It's weird that the first guy didn't use the Ista D properly. You can dive into the problem with that software and it can tell you exactly what to check and test? The Delphi is more generic so it's more guess work tbh. We use the Ista software all the time and it works wonders.

Thank you so much; think I should go back to the 1st guy. What should I tell him if I want to get a more in detail report on that software? Hopefully, he knows how to use it.

Or where in Cape Town can I take my car?

It's just really frustrating if they can't explain properly:dunnoanymore:

Thanks

The error codes are a good place to start.

But you sometimes just need a good eye when you open the bonnet and check the basics:
What could cause the car to go into limp mode?
What could cause a boost leak?
What could cause a batery voltage issue?
When was the last service done. When is the next service due...
Etc...etc.

Common sense questions during a proper physical check will go a long way.

Hey; got error again now. Is it safe to continue driving?

Service all up to date. Oil & filter was done about 6 / 7 months ago.

The only thing that is not done yet is the plugs, but the car did not notify me yet.

With that error's; can it be the vanos? or can it be a few other things?

I did a bit research last night ; :fencelook:

Any Good BMW guy I can take my car too in CPT; that knows his stuff. I'm not saying the guy I took it to does not. Just need a proper second opinion.

Thanks again

I've heard Garage 808 is quit good for sorting out of plan BMW's. Give them a shout.

They're in Bellville.

your timing chain or turbo maybe be on its way out. These engines are well know to just fail at anytime :(

Best to take it to SMG Cape town to see whats going on.

I had the same issue on my former 2013 116i. Used to get that error on the daily. Switch off and start it would be gone maybe after third attempt or after a 15min engine off wait.

In the end was a sensor on the exhaust somewhere, was 1500 odd Rand. Motorplan sorted it out in the end but by this time had gone in to Bmw for a 3rd time before it was resolved.

Hi; exactly what I'm experiencing now; super frustrating.

Happened this morning and this afternoon. So I went back to the guy that did the diagnostics for me. Got a better report from him.

He said he needs to strip engine to see what's the problem *Cost Anything from 16k to 20k+:blueCry:

I just hope its something small; it just seems that its a major issue for a car that's only done 90k

Thx

Not sure what he means by stripping the engine.

Take it to a dealership and let them troubleshoot the problem...as i said before reading the error codes is important but only one part of trouble shooting.

I assume the car is out of motor plan even though its at 90 000ks ?

Hi there; Some feedback

Had the car back for about 2 weeks; Done about 500km. Car runs much smoother now; also noticed idling is quieter.

Took the car to an independent BMW workshop (ex BMW dealer mechanic); one of the BMW dealer guys where I bought the car from recommended him.:fencelook:

He picked up that the Timing chain was stretched & the turbo oil feed and return lines were blocked and that there is a possibility that the turbo might seize at some stage, could not give me a time frame.

Parts Replaced:
Timing Chain Kit F20 N13
Front Crank Seal
Turbo Oil Feed Pipe F20 N13
Turbo Oil Return Pipe F20 N13
Turbo Coolant Hose O-Ring x 2
Hollow bolt E60
Oil Filter N13
BMW Longlife Oil 5W-30

Thanks again

From my understanding , speeds that the turbo shaft runs, if those lines were blocked, the turbo would be gone long ago. If your car went for every service it had to, with those low mileage, no way the lines would be blocked.

If you dont mind me asking what was the cost of all those parts and the labour? :fencelook:
Just interested to know.
Glad your issue is sorted though. I hope you have many trouble free kms ahead of you.

Please note that the drive train problem cost by the following parts, vanos control valves, stuck or not working at all, vanos Brocken or stuk, dirty oil filter
(Do the oil and oil filter change clean vanos control valve) if the car is showing that drive train issues after is been repaired! Then the timing is off set.
