I seem to have a clinking noise coming from my drivetrain when changing from forward to reverse (and when accelerating and decelerating). It sounds a bit like a metal plate catching on something near the diff. It is difficult to find out what it is has anyone experienced such a problem before. Other than tis the car still going well.

Hi Garry,

E46 is a nasty beast when it comes to drive train noise; things like backlash are well documented on the net...

A clicking noise though, not sure, but when I swop the cogs on my E46 it sounds like I am crushing coconuts.

Hi there. Sounds like backlash in the diff, but could be other things, loose shock or handbrake shoe perhaps, they have a tinny sound, or loose brake pads moving in the calipers. Prop shaft or diff is first choice for me though

The noise is a defnite metalic clink and not a crunch, if it where a crunch i would be concerned. If i am not mistakened there is a center bearing on the propshaft has anyony had problems with this as it seems more like what i hear.

Also recently changed rear pads and checked suspension out all seems fine in those areas although there are what seem to be loose fitting plates on top of the wishbones that could make the noise over bumps but not when normal driving.

Put the car on ramps today and noise seems to be from needle rollers in propshaft can anyone recommend a good propshaft service centre in durban area.
