does the e36 323i have a rev limiter?

Likely that someone has had a go at the cluster.

I know of an e36M3 with a dodgy cluster that revs at 6000rpm when the engine is at half that speed.

Given the limited photo i guess you are doing around 80/90km/h. Unless that is 1st gear i can't really see your tachometer being accurate.

As i Said impossible on stock valve train. possibly an input sensor or something that's giving the wrong reading.

with the stock e36 323i gear ratio your speed in 2nd at 9000rpm would be 144kph

so you have a cluster or sensor issue

I have had the same issue in a 325i, it was revving way of the clock, the issue was that the previous owner changed the cluster and ever since that it use to seem like it pulls forever but in fact it wasnt, it was just incorrect

Yes i said FIRST gear. I have a 320i with the short ratio diff in the back, 90 is spot on for 6500rpm redline. No way in hell chum. Have you never noticed that the the revs seem to climb oh oh so quickly once past a certain point without any extra surge.

Have you ever heard a M3/M5/M6 running at 8000rpms? Have you heard a S2000 at 9000? Have you heard a AMG running to 7500? Your bmw is as quiet as a lexus at at 40000rpms at 9000

It is as clear as daylight your cluster is busted. 40km/h at 6000rpms come now, even a Polo 1.4 has longer gearing. 9000 rpms at 90, come now really? 7000 at 110 in 3rd? Again a polo has longer gear than that. It's a awesome party trick to impress the not so sharp but here you are dealing with guys who own cars that can actually run to a real 9000rpms.

When i bought it i was impressed cause the dealer said they had it chipped. Most probably cause they saw the rev's aren't right.

Who knows someone that can remapp mine. 96 model needs to be remapped post 96 needs to be chipped

You can only hear vanos related noises at very specific rev ranges and mostly at idle.

Once the engine gets up to high revs the noise for the engine will mask any vanos noises. (well in most cases)

I would say that the noises you hear are engine stress related and not meaning to be critical but if you continue changing gears like that the noises will soon become gearbox related

100% correct. 4cyl signal is 2 pulses per engine revolution. 6cyl signal is 3 pulses per engine revolution.
In the OP case, the 4cyl cluster is being fed 3 pulses per engine revolution and over reading by 33%.

The opposite will happen if you put a 6cyl cluster in a 4cyl e36, the cluster will under read by 33%.

Didn't know the specifics, but i've had the same swapping from a 4 pot to a 6 pot. The clusters(e36)/coding plug(e30) need swapping!
