I phoned up BMW to quote on a back bumper for my E30 they said it will cost me R12000 I said are they mad the car is 20 yrs old.
So I found a bumper at a scrap yard in perfect condition and I only paid R700 .
The South Africans in this country are mad to ask those prices !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Guys, we at the dealerships are often pressed as to why our prices are so very high,:hammerhead: The parts we receive, especially trim items are purchased in Euros, this as we know is already a hefty premium, and converted to South African Rands it suddenly becomes a lot, add the max 10% retail mark up, and viola, we are at R625.00 a badge. Yes the pirate badges are much cheaper, and yes they are as good as the original, but the one bonus when purchasing a genuine part, is that you receive a two year warranty on all parts and accessories, which many other pirate parts do not provide. The dealerships would love to retail more at a cheaper rate, but until the rand performs to the euro,:dunno: this will be a pipe dream. Regards:

Very nice of you to reply. I really appreciate it. The weird thing is, the guy at the scrapyard know that the badge sells for R625. So we were discussing this, and he told me thats nothing, the badge for an new opel astra is even more expensive!!!:dropjaw:
So it would seem that its not only beemer badges with those price tags.
I can understand that the dealerships dont really set the price, and i understand that it is imported as well, but thats still really expensive for a plastic badge.
Again really nice to see somebody from a dealership on here!

If you are going to talk :bs:, you should at least try back it up with facts. BMWSA is taking its very own customers and pulling them through its ring and you know it. We pay the highest price in the world for BMW spares. I have imported original BMW spares from the States and paid about 30% (Including Duties, VAT and courier fees) less than the price from SMG (which coincidentally was already cheaper than Forsdicks)

I would like to show you what I mean with regards to your rubbish about the EUR, below is a 1 yr historic exchange rate graph of EUR vs ZAR, you will notice that the EUR has steadily become weaker against the rand, this has been the trend over the past 3yrs, yes that is correct, 3 yrs. In essence unless we are being taken for a ride and BMWSA laughing at us all while doing it, the prices should have been coming DOWN over this period for us consumers here in SA, or at least have stayed the same (taking into consideration that there could be an increase in the parts prices from BMWAG) because the EUR weakening against the ZAR would have offset the increases.

EURvsZAR.jpg

So next time you would like to come and justify why we are being ripped a new one every time we buy spares directly from BMW, please provide us with the REAL reasons. Although I'm pretty sure its simply about enrichment and nothing to do with exchange rates.

Right so i did a bit of googling (is that even a word?) and saw some interesting stuff.

Just check it out for yourselfs guys.

Google this "51148132375 prices" and see what you come up with. The number is the part number for the badge.

Even the most expensive one (converted into rand) is half the price of the price i got quoted at the dealership. The cheapest oem one, brand new, was like $18.00:thinking:

Sorry, i dont know how to post links, otherwise i would have.

10% retail mark up

I think that might have been a typo, and was meant to be 100%, because how in the name of all that I love can the sales department offer up to 25% DISCOUNT on items that have only been marked up by 10%???

I dunno.
After market prices are cheaper than oem parts but why?
I mean does it cost bmw more to manufacture than it does other people:dunno:
Had a minor prang with my e36 about 18 months ago and since i didnt have any insurance on it at the time i repaired it myself

I had to replace the bonnet, right front fender, headlight, indicator, bumper and trimmings also the cradle (think its what its called)

bmw bloem quoted me R18 000 and i paid 5800 for everything aftermarket and that is including the cradle that i had to buy from bmw!!!
HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE???????

and everything fits perfectly i might add.....

Well ive been told by dealer friends that BMW Japan sells parts for cheaper that they can even buy them.
I also have to agree that funny business is going on. 1 one year the coolant lever sensor in my car went from R250 to R420, it the same simple ass part. Why the increase if the Rand is improving. If the Greeks keep rioting the Euro will be less then the Rand soon enough.

Makes me wonder if its time for a open letter to BMW Germany, it would need to be researched and written properly, but I wonder if the head honchos in Munich know about BMW South Africa's "profiteering"!

My favourite one is an M60 shortblock (Block and pistons) R65K Nikasil was never my fault, but you expect me to pay that....

Now the most expensive listed retail for any old BMW left in existance with an M60 engine is also 55 - 60K. The average price is R35K

Are you telling me some guy out there is going to pay like 40K for a car and then fork out another 65 K + labour (about 80K) for a new engine from BMW, rubbish it makes zero sense.

They clearly do not think it out at all. If anybody from BMW ever reads this, please donate me one of your M60 shortblocks that you will never ever sell to anybody ever again at this price. I can save you the warehousing costs.

Hows this for ridiculous price increases....

In Oct '08, I was quoted R8000 for the "BMW Performance" exhaust for my 130i. I left it for months to decide. Then in July '09 the price was R15500. Within 9 months the price was almost double.

My car went in for a service in July '09 and I decided to get the "BMW Performance" short shift gear lever. In July '09 it was R2000. About 3 months (Feb/March '10) ago it was R5000. Thats more than double in 7 months.

Its shocking.

I've put my "wish list" of other BMW Performance parts on hold

i reckon its because south africa is a captive market, that prices are out of control.. i mean its not like you can import a car, everything possible gets done to protect our local motor industry. i have heard that 3-series beemers built at rosslyn plant gets exported and sold for cheaper than you can buy it here :censored:

its not just bmw though, i have a nissan 300zx that i maintain and modify exclusively by buying from a american dealer, courtesty nissan in houston, texas.. for example i bought a oem oil pump from this dealer, paid in dollar, paid shipping costs, paid vat & duties local, and it was still only 50% of what the local nissan dealership wants to charge me.. no word of lie :)

how the hell do they justify that!!?

Reading this is interesting. One thing you all forgot to add in including the stealer is the Multi Million rand Premises these guys have to pay off. So :bs: Euro and 10% markup. Explain this. What is your Hourly rate for labour. You guys charge more per hour than Doctors, and I work in the field. So stop trying to :bs:. Be honest and I might buy but lie to me and you can go get :smileysex:.

Example. BMW front Pads. R1200 at stealer (this excludes Sensors, which I didnt need as mine were fine)
ATE front pads R450. (BMW have ATE calipers so dont tell me it is a pirate part.)

Yes nice to have a dealer coment but EPIC fail on the LIES.

4.99 USD = 113.260 ZAR for badge Include shipping and double the price. MMM Stealer R625. Now try and pull the other one?

Its seems alot of prices have doubled recently. I gues the competitions board cant really do much as its not that they price fixing, its just head office charging what they like that gets filtered down to the dealers. I think best would be to contact BMW Germany direct and ask they what is the process for setting prices as we are getting raped. Lately I just buy most things from Ebay. Even with shipping + duties most works out cheaper. As more and more people start thinking alike this might start putting pressure on them to start dropping prices, but dont expect anything drastic. But as long as people keep paying they will keep charging, and there are plenty of people out there that cant be bothered to look for a good deal, you will be suprised how many people change their tyres at the dealer while servicing so they dont have to go to the tyre shop.

Also to put something into perspective, the dealers make more money on selling parts then cars.

Well gents, think about it.

In the current climate, car sales have collapsed, while significant fixed costs have stayed in place (factories and so on).

The consumer simply is not buying cars, particularly in Europe and the states where the equity crisis hit the hardest.

So, here you sit, gazillions in fixed costs, yet your not pushing sales revenue on new car sales, so close your doors, or up service parts.

As the consumer is no longer purchasing cars, and stuck in a negative equity situation on that expensive car he bought when liquidity and risk appitite was in plenty, he will still need parts, no 2 ways about it, so substitute revenue by upping service parts.

The other thing as well that you all need to keep in mind is transport costs, since the drop off in world consumption, fewer and fewer ships/planes have been circling the globe, yet fixed costs on the ships/planes stay the same, so what did the industry do.. Raise the prices.

Then you have all of the entities inbetween that adapt the same logic.

It really is a vicious cycle.

Dont get me wrong, I am not defending BMW here, something as idiotic as a badge which has a manufacturing cost of a couple of EUR cents due to economies of scale should not come close to those prices, but this is why parts have almost doubled.

That master cylinder for my E34 was 12k form BMW... 12 fscking grand for a cylindrical tube with a couple of valves and some rubbers.. manuf costs could not have been more then EUR 30, and as the part is still current in the ATE part range, how do you get from that to 12k retail with a 25% discount.

One would expect that safety equipment such as brakes would follow a cost leadership strategy to protect brand image, but noooooooo...

Another daylight robbery!!!
I lost the keys to my 2002 330Ci and could not find my spare (having moved house twice in the last 7 years). Cost of replacement is R17,000 (R400 to get out of 'park', R600 for flatbed to dealership, R8,000 for replacement key and lock set, R6,000 for breaking and replacing the steering lock and R2,000 for labour). And I was told the car insurance will pay only R2,000 towards this. What a ripoff!!
