Damaged M6

Hi all

I have come across a water damaged M6. 2007 model. Apparantly window was left open and water flooded the floor panels and now car can't start.

I was considering getting this car as a project (for the right price). Am I being stupid and getting something that will become a black hole and not be worth it in the end?Due to the fact that electrics damaged I have no way of telling condition of engine or transmission.

What would be a good amount to pay for something like this? I was thinking of offering something as long as R50k due to the amount of unknowns. The current owner doesnt seem interested in it anymore.

Any advise will be appreciated.

Cheap is expensive. Walk away.

You have no idea what is wrong with the car and its true condition. If it were an easy fix, it would have been fixed already.

He could sell the engine with gearbox for around 100k. If he takes your offer, be wary.

I guess that makes sense.. If it were a simple fix then could have been done already. I can fix things fairly well but reckon an M6 may be a step too far.

I agree, if he accepts R50k that would be suspect.

The gear box and engine alone are worth more.

If he decided to strip the car for spares he would get even more out of it.

Walk away

The way I understood the post is that he would make an offer of something that would leave him with at least 50k in pocket for the unknown problems? Can OP clarify?

Surely the engine and transmission can't be damaged if it rained into the cabin?

Take a reliable mechanic and an auto electrician with you to inspect the car before deciding to purchase.

This sounds like a case of the rich absent minded owner who couldn't give two hoots about it because he can just buy another one and wants to flog this one off without effort. Or.... It could be the biggest lemon you will ever buy...

IF, and thats a Big IF , that infact the cars floor panel was flooded by a window being left open, we are talking about record rain here, enough to fill the floorwell and short some things out at the control modules, OBD port etc.

Now we have had some record rain recently a couple of weeks back, but if the damage was infact caused by rain through the window, changing out a few looms and modules would be all thats needed to sort it out, and obviously shampooing that damp smell out etc.

As other guys have mentioned, the scrapping of the car would be worth more than your possible offer.

If the guy will let you take it to BMW for diagnostics....... then you could have a much better idea of whats going on.

If the car was involved in a flooding incident (where idiot drivers try to negotiate virtual rivers in sedans with speed) as is common in JHB when we have torrential downpours, I would advise you to walk away, everything will be fried, water in the engine, intakes etc.

Walk away.

Just off the bat, based on what you are saying, I would advise you to walk away.
Spend that R50k toward an e46 330d and smile, or even an older model M Coupe.

either way, let us know what comes of it.

I am going to have a look at the car now and will update once I have seen what it looks like.

Gert from OBDWorks has done wonders on flood damaged vehicles, take him with you to inspect the vehicle.

Shew. Nothing is cheap on an M6. Having owned a 2007 myself, I can say that with confidence. Electrics are amongst the most expensive things to sort out, and you need to find someone competent with BMW electrics on top of that.

Everything in that car is electronically controlled, so it's a pandoras box of potential rabbit holes and wallet drainers.

Had a look at the car. Parked in a workshop inside a taxi rank. Drivers seat and other items are removed and you can tell was water under the drivers seat.

Don't think the main ECU etc are fried. However the mechanic was talking about putting oil in transmission. Also tax disc expired September last year so looks like it been parked a while. Body and interior in good nick and no damp smell weirdly.

They say engine can start so will have another look tomorrow. Suspect gearbox has issues though.

But overall something seems amiss.

A workshop in the middle of a taxi rank?

If the taxis all around it are in mint condition and perfect running order, then take it...?

Was a single bay workshop. Hardly could fit 2 cars. When I say workshop, well...

When in doubt... walk away.

Sounds very very dodge.

And news update; sump, block and heads for a V10 goes for R200k now at the scrap yards, if you can find one.

Follow the advice in this thread and run away. Finding a running car is enough of a risk let alone this.

Ooooooor if they're dumb enough to accept a low ball offer and the engine is in good working order. Buy it. Strip it and sell parts. Profit?

I reckon will put in a crazy low ball offer and see what he says. So far seems to want to get rid of the car. Also seeing the workshop its at shows that he don't really care about it no more..

Otherwise it's one to run away from
