I've been looking for an S85 donor to do a project and fit it into an E46 :)

Do it and make us all proud

Just read through this now and honestly speaking if it turns out he is the time of chap that's loaded and doesn't really care because he can afford a new one, then I really doubt it would be where you say it is. The way you described the place it sounds like quite a shady place IMO, but again you might be fortunate enough to actually have him be the type of guy that does not give a rats a$$ about salvaging what's left of the car. But like the other members have mentioned its best you get as much info on it as you possibly can and if you take the plunge at least you will know what you're working with and what your options are.

If the previous owner was the type of chap that couldn't care about money and cost of repair , This is how I see it ,

1) The car would have been insured and repaired or written off by the insurance if it was to costly to repair .

2)If the car was not insured , The fact that its in some garage , would mean that he did at one point intend repairing the car , But If that was the case and he did take it to a shop to have repaired , He would have taken it to BMW or a more reputable shop to have repaired and wouldn't bother or care about smaller dingy shops. 99% of the time its taken to BMW , I have friends like this who couldn't care about cost and just want it fixed so they just send it over to BMW for all their repairs ... Some just trade it in and buy another car .

3) If it was an easy repair , this car would have been fixed easily no matter cost ( Rich guy ).

This car sounds very dodgy , Could be an insurance write off , still marked code 2 ,Purchased from Auction and to complex for them to fix , Money could still be owed on it to a bank which in this case , He cant sell the car as it belongs to the bank , And if he does , his in trouble , your in trouble and the bank will regard it as stolen and come for you ... Or it Could be a stolen car or was used in a Crime , They tried removing the tracker and pulled all the wrong plugs now it wont start lol ooooh :cartel:.

what story's this car may hold , hehe

Would be interesting to hear its true story .

I've reached conclusion that best to walk away. Too many things just not adding up. Suspect the car also has some serious gearbox issues.

Would probably turn out to be a black hole and be an endless money pit..

I would stay far away. There is nothing in these cars that are cheap to fix. You will end up paying a fortune to get it in the condition it deserves to be. The vast amount of electronics in these cars will cost you a boat load of cash to fix. Non of the items on these cars are easily sourced locally.

We are talking about a car that has indicator globes costing R500 each. Just walk away.

But it could be stripped and sold as spares.

Even more so as you said spares are hard to come by.
