could this be the release bearing on its way out?

Recently I've replaced the clutch and flywheel of my E34 535i with a new unit however I haven't replaced the release bearing.
Since then, I've been hearing this metallic, grinding sound with acceleration, especially at 1400 - 1600 RPM.
When idling, i hear it faintly. When i step on the clutch, the sound disappears.
This makes me think it could be the bastard release bearing. Am i right, or could it be something else?

Important: I removed the dual mass flywheel and replaced it with the single mass from an E12/E28 with the appropriate clutch.

I removed the Dual Mass and put a solid flywheel in. It's the best thing that has happened to me since i met my wife

Pardon my novice nature but release bearing is located where ? I know slave master cylinder for clutch isn't too hard to get to but not sure of the release bearing?

part of the clutch/flywheel construction, so internal, you would need to remove the gearbox to access it

Dual mass fly wheels and run flat tyres... the devils work.

Thanks and mine might be going as well. Nightmare came true by the pic might as well do the entire clutch while I'm at it. Bearing seals and gaskets should always be changed when working on vital parts of car imo

Typically how much do you estimate the repair job to be for an clutch throw out bearing? I take it that it's process as if to remove and install the clutch right?

yes. It involves the removing of the gearbox.
