Cooked Brakes 135i

I was bored with nothing better to do this afternoon...
So I decided to go for a little drive, destination: Franschhoek Pass:rollsmile:

After having to wait for 10min at a stop-n-go roadworks at the start of the twisties - Don't worry, I was right up front of the queue:=): - I blitzed that pass like never before!!
No cars in front of me, and no cars coming from the other side!as they were waiting at the other stop-n-go at the other end.

It was pure heaven!!!I think I managed to top 180/190kph at the "main straight" if you can call it that...yes yes insane I know, but hey, there was never gonna be another chance like this - ever!

After reaching the other side I pulled over for the car to cool down a bit.Immediately I could smell something "burning", but I didn't expect it to be the brakes!!!
There was smoke coming from the fronts! Not a helluva lot but definitely noticeble!
On the way back I eased off a bit on the brakes so as to not entirely F-them up.But I could feel the pedal feel was a bit mooshy/pap and the brakes didn't feel as sharp as before (I noticed this before I stopped actually while I was still having fun)

Did I totally wreck my brakes?or do they simply need time to cool off after such a run?
The service indicators still say brakes change in 30k km...I think its gonna be MUCH sooner if I keep this up:roflol::roflol::roflol:

I don't drive like this every day mind you, just conditions were so perfect I couldn't resist.

Here's a video I made, the smoke is only somewhat visible:rollsmile:

Brake pads and disk should recover once cooled down, but beware of hidden problems, ie if you pedal still feels spongy or soft, then you could have taken the brake fluid to beyond its specified operating temperature range.

fluid flush and change will sort that out

Careful, those Brembo calipers don't like too much heat. The seals on the pistons will eventually need replacement if you keep this up. The pads and discs should recover after properly cooling down.

Maybe you boiled the brake fluid? Bleed brakes and top up with fluid. And check if discs are warped.

Happens to me everytime I drive hard, I get monumental brake fade after just one hard stop too. Had an incident where i overshot a turn because my brakes went dull.

Just don't think any dot 5.1 is better. Some dot 4 will have a higher dry boiling point. Although over time I suppose as water gets absorbed dot 5.1 will be better. Unless you're doing regular brake fluid flushes.

If you pedal still feels spongy, your brake fluid boiled, and now has air in the system.

Solution: bleed the brake system and you would be fine

But wow, you must have been having an awesome time :)

This is worrying though. That car must have been tested and developed. I mean its bmw.

Why is his brakes overheating. Why?

Plenty people hitting trackdays... I have not heard of this before.

You can only push a car so much. This is not bmw fault. Chances are the fluid is old and 'wer' and isn't operating at the same heat it should

Could also be if the disks have been skimmed before, this causes them to heat up quicker than disks that have not been skimmed

Sure it's the brakes? Might be something like a piece of plastic caught on the exhaust.

nope definitely the brakes! The smoke came only from the calipers...

Wow, that bad huh??:nonono:
It can get scary when this happens

Well I wont be doing this again anytime soon...even though I still have motorplan:nonono:

I will feel the brakes today. If they still feel spongy then its off to the dealership for a bleed and maybe new pads and/or discs

And yes, I was having a blast!:joy::joy:

Yip agreed. And it was only like 10min or 20min max.I can't imagine some people going for a trackday filled with HOURS of fun.wonder how these brakes would perform?or not perform:nonono:

Motorplan pads?

My point earlier when a poster replied that its not BMWs fault was actually this:

Its bmw. A high performance car. Heavy but high quality brakes. Vented. Ducted cooling.

I mean even our 80s e30s had ducts for cooling.

I cant speak for bmw on this but ive had a beetle on a trackday. An 72 beetle with drums... and I didnt cook the brakes.

Same thing with a Golf 2 and Renault.

Never did the brakes cook.

Something is amiss here.

Boxerrulez what i wad saying is if the brakes have poor brake fluid their boiling point significantly drops. It is most likely not poor design but poor maintanence.
