Fanatics I decided to take the plunge and decat my 2002 318ti. Before the decat the car would smoke when I reverse but not always and I have been losing/using alot of oil lately even after doing an oil change service. The decat was done on Friday and the car is smoking really bad especially when i pull of on first gear.

I haven’t been to the mech yet but i just wanted to find out from trusted fanatics first on what could be causing this before the mech bullsh*ts me. Im thinking rings and bearings but my engine knowledge is very limited. :dunno::thinking:

My knowledge is als limited but maybe a crank case breather valve went bad en there is oil getting to the intake.

Whats your mileage, and what oil did they put in?

That sounds like your Valve Stem Seals are kaput, bad news is your head will have to be redone, which is not cheap.
My car did the exact same thing, if you are based in JHB i can give you the details of the mech who fixed mine

The cats have nothing to do with the car smoking or not. Cats are NOT particulate filters eg. they dont act as an air filter. If the car is smoking, you have to look for the problem further up the system. Like the seals etc that was mentioned in the previous posts.

The cats will reduce the smoke issue or hide it a bit. They get extremly hot inside and super burn some of the smoke. Ok they get cloged up in the process, so just as well they were removed.

The car needs to be checked as others have said. Take it to your local bmw tech. The cats were just masking the real problem.

IMHO a compression test done on a normal temperature motor then redone after pouring a spoon or so of oil down the spark plug hole will show an increase in pressure if rings or bore are worn . If going downhill under compression then accelerating causes smoke this is most likely valve stem seals letting oil past . crankcase breather can also be culprit - easiest to replace and work from there . Good luck .

Forgot to mention I drive an E90 on which I replaced the crank case breather and had a 318ti before this. Same motor if I'm not mistaken? N46
