Cold start/Hot start

Wsup,

Just noticed how easily my engine starts from cold. It literally bursts into life at the slightest twitch of the key. When the engine is hot though it isn't as eager. Don't get me wrong it starts every time, but I have to twist the key for longer and it doesn't 'burst' into life but rather 'eases' into it. Performance is great (non misfire), and the fuel economy is fine. Is this normal or a sign of things to come (bad injectors?)...

Anyway I just thought I'd ask :thumbs:

At cold startup your "auto-choke" is active which means your fuel mixture has almost twice as much fuel and air which assists with not only giving that kick but also keeps the mixture right until it meets operating temperature.

Whereas at running temperature the mixture is normal.

This is how it was explained to me as my old Ford Bantam was the same.

Warm start should be just as fast.

The fact that cold start is good indicates the the fuel system fpr and injectors are in 100% working order, so no need to worry.

The warm start is verly likely being affected by fuel quality or a larger than normal spark plug gap.

My car 'blips' the throttle on start up...

the other day i parked next to an e90 330i and when i came out the shop the owner started his car it was a bit of a let down started up like a polo (guess is save fuel) when i started my car he was still there did not look happy when he hear mine start up :fencelook:

does the e36 also 'blip'

I replaced my plugs about 8,500kms ago (last service), can they deteriorate that quickly? Fuel quality hmmm....no way to ascertain that really...

Haha I know what you mean, Burgy built me an intake so it starts with a bit of a 'woof', always gets them at filling stations :rollsmile:

But no it doesn't blip...at least not without the aid of my Adidas :rollsmile:

My car is opposite, infact some winter mornings my car point blank refuses to start and i havta push it into the sun, pop the hood for the engine to get warm, than only does she start!

i recently bought a 2005 318ti and i love it, only problem is it does'nt start properly. Sometimes it starts with one swing, other times it starts after 3 or 4 but at its worst it takes half an hour or more to start. Its not a dead swing though. It sounds like it wants to start but just can't get there.

Some mechanics say the head gasket is on its way out. Others say its the cold start switch( hope i said that right) and then another said that the head gasket is blown or cracked.

has anybody else had this problem like this??????????

Almost everyday and even sleeping on the roads, took it to my machanic said the engin is on its way out and the next day traded in for 130i
