2004 BMW E46 320D

Whenever heat gauge gets to normal there is a loud chirping/screeching noise from the engine at idle. When cold its silent.

Any help would be appreciated.

Already changed the:
crank pulley,
all fan belt pulleys,
tensioner and pulley,
waterpump
Genuine BMW Fanbelt
Powersteering pump

All changed and the noise is still there.

Thanks

Hi, open oil cap just enough to release the pressure but don't remove cap completely and see if it goes away

Will try it. And if it does go away?

Is the sound worse when turning?
Is it worse when the car is moving?
Does the sound ho away when clutch is pressed in?

Automatic vehicle
Standing still and idling while hot. When switching from drive to neutral there is no change in the sound.

Sounds like a belt but its not constant. Intermittent

Remove both belts and started the car and see if the noise is there. Then replace one belt and re check, then the last one.

Will help to narrow down the cause.

Make sure one of tou pullies aren't warped. Try to pinpoint what side of the engine bay it's coming from. Then if it's top or bottom.

The scenario you are describing sound like the opposite that I had with the m6. I would have a chirp when car was cold and eould go away when warmed up. Turned out to be the accessory belt. But in my case the aircon and power steering runs from that. And rest from main belt.

That makes sense because when the rubber gets hot it grips better.

What you are describing sounds like a bearing of a pully, or even a pully itself.

Thanks for all the help. The mechanic said it was the waterpump. He then replaced it today and I paid. Before I got home the noise was back.

So now I am R1500 out of pocket and still have the birds under the bonnet. [LOUDLY CRYING FACE]

He fetched the car immediatly, so will hear tommorrow what he thinks is the next problem.

Not sure but I had that chirping sound and my PcV was about to go, replaced it and noise went away

Does it sound like this:

[video=youtube]

I had chirping nose on the e46, Ross Duncan told me it could be the CCV(crank case vent valve). Mine turned out the be the alternator pulley.

Here is a video of an DIY (caution he swears a lot because it not an easy fix)

[video=youtube]

It might be that?

Did you replace the water-pump for a second time ?

In your first post you listed the water-pump as being changed and then again yesterday ?

Secondly - R1500 for a pump is too cheap;

The pump from the agents (the only one you should use) is R1800, you will loose a fair amount of coolant probably half - so you will need two liters of coolant R80 odd per liter with two liters of distilled water.

Add 3 hours of labour @ R700 per hour - R4000 odd.

If the diesels use the same pump as petrol they are extremely cheap when buying from places like goldwagen, think I laid 1600 for a brand new radiator + pump.

Exactly the same part btw.

The logic of agents only parts is seriously flawed, Bmw do not manufacture parts, they are made by the likes of Behr, Lembforder , Bosch ect which are sold at places such as goldwagen, imcommex ect who sell them for half the price of bmw in most cases.

Whilst this is true for some parts, I don't believe this to be the case with water-pump recent threads by the likes of Moranor and Yuben for example.

I myself have had Meyle water pump that failed out the box for my previous 318i.

With the appalling frailty of BMW cooling systems, it's not where I'd be cutting corners.

But hey, you pays your money and make your choice.

No just replaced it one time. I never use oem parts on any vehicle of mine. Bmw qoute R5000 for a crank pully and Goldwagen R2500. Madness!
