Changing oil brand Question

Sup guys,

My 330i is starting to use a bit of oil now, been noticing this of late. Done some reading up on this and seems to be considered sort of normal when you have a bit of mileage so im happy to accept defeat here:roflol:.

I was old told this can be somewhat reduced by using a high grade oil like 5W40 or 0W40. Whats your guys take on this?

I plan on doing a oil change soon soon so i would like to address this issue asap. Seeing a 5w40 oil was recommend i was thinking of opting for Shell Helix Ultra 5w40, price is great, oil is readily available and its bmw approved so its win win:thumbs:

Is there any other oil you guys would recommend and why.

TIA

You're potentially at risk of starting a long oil debate there, but I (and some others) use Shell Helix Ultra 5w40 in my 330i, and believe it to be a very good oil. I can't comment on the oil usage or whether or not the switch will improve the oil usage, but I would say research all the common cause of oil leaks and just double check them all.

thanks Adis,

you probably spot on with the oil debate

to cut long story short seeing you use it and a few other and another buddy with a 330i its good enough to use on my 330i

so Shell Helix i turn back to you:thumbs:

i really hate the fact that i have only covered 4000km on my current oil in the and it looks as black as a car that had a oil change about a year ago:thumbdo:

im not sure if this is due to previous owner negligence in oil change or what the cause of the oil turning black so quickly is but i for one really hate it.

the last service was done by smg cpt town and the oil was clean (golden colour) when i checked it so i know they changed oil as previous oil was super super black:yuck:. This is what pushed me to booking my baby in for a oil change with smg who used castrol maganetec professional (at least i hope they did).

Im also moving away from Castrol due to the horrified stories you here of sludge build up etc:cry: (please i dont want to debate:roflol:)

Lets see how much joy i get out the Shell.

Would love to give Liqui-moly a go as i was happy with the product i used on my Honda but they a tad bit expensive and not readily available should i need a quick top up.

Just remember the Helix ultra is good at cleaning, so the oil might turn dirty looking fairly quickly if the insides of the engine are dirty.. so do another oil change in 5000Km's or so

Yeah im hoping that last oil change would of cleant out all the old crap that was in there.

Im nearing the 5000 mark pretty soon so i might as well change it:thumbs:

Hopefully the Helix will do some more cleansing

Dont get me wrong i dont mind oil turning black i know it does over time and i know its not always a bad thing but if you see my oil you would understand why im not happy

I am not starting a debate, but I just want to say that there is nothing wrong with Castrol oil. I've used Castrol Syntec for ages and it's probably the best oil I've ever used. All I actually want to say is that you should go for full synthetic oil, you will not be sorry.

My opinion is that regardless of the oil used, regular changes are probably the most important thing. I'm doing a few short change intervals just as a cleaning exercise (every 5000km) and then I'll will probably just change every 10 000km after that.

This is the result of good synthetic - any brand and changed regularly on a 20 year old engine......

weather or not it will improve the oil consumption i dont know but it is a good oil... you may find that some brand will help a little with the consumption issue...

Nothing wrong with helix ultra I use it in my 330i as well.

(insert worthless statement about how I have been using it for more that two years and 30k km in my car without issues here)

If you are worried about how dirty the oil is, change the oil every 5k km and the filter every second change.

Just keep in mind that engine oil will blacken quickly due to combustion contaminants.

i have to agree with you here

however i do feel oil is also important but im guess you are referring to using proper spec'd oil for your car and not just any old crappy oil

5000 is a little to soon for me i would much more like to go every 10 000 that would be perfect pocket wise, probably about 2/3 oil changes a year:thumbs:
