You mean the inline fuses.... cause if so... thats exactly your problem.
No power to the DDE due to that plate...
what would cause the smoke in the engine bay though?

I went to a used BMW spare shop in Alberton now, he asked me R750 for the part. BMW directly charges R666.86 incl vat, with our company discount R466 . Is that guy smoking socks in that used spare shop?

That must be D&S spares that you visited?

In the engine bay, on the left hand side (Right hand drivers if you want to be technical) on the shock tower, you will see a biggish electrical connector that you can flap open for the battery positive.
Right about there, I think its on the same housing, or there about, you will see a smaller wire on a ring terminal held on by a bolt. This wire actually runs into the channel and physically runs over the engine into the electric box on the top right of the vehicle.
If you meausre for 12Vdc+ on that cable, and you have power, then its something else, however, if you dont, your DDE is not getting power.
That pin that I described, not the wire, the exposed pin on the pedistal comes directly from the battery, fused onto that plate with an inline fuse, no power means dead car.
Fix the fuse/change the plate, and bob is your grandma's kitten....
