Plate on the positive cables,

You mean the inline fuses.... cause if so... thats exactly your problem.

No power to the DDE due to that plate...

what would cause the smoke in the engine bay though?

Maybe it was the starter that started smoking after swinging it until the battery was flat :dunno:

finally found stock. Sending a driver now.
I went to a used BMW spare shop in Alberton now, he asked me R750 for the part. BMW directly charges R666.86 incl vat, with our company discount R466 . Is that guy smoking socks in that used spare shop?:flyfun:

yeah - there's a number of possibilities :bangdesk:

As for the smoke, I was told that it could be excess fuel that was being pumped and the engine did not know what to do with it. The steering lock light that came on shows the system went into safe zone because half the electronics was not working. This was explained to me by my workshop manager. He may be wrong.
Until I get that part...well we will be guessing.

That must be D&S spares that you visited?

Not sure, they are in alberton north. He could not give me a price and had me wait for 10 mins while his guy looked for 1, then only when he saw he it, said out R750. I said thanks but BMW supplying it for R600 and that's brand new and walked out.
Some ppl want to get rich.

K hold on, do the following.

In the engine bay, on the left hand side (Right hand drivers if you want to be technical) on the shock tower, you will see a biggish electrical connector that you can flap open for the battery positive.

Right about there, I think its on the same housing, or there about, you will see a smaller wire on a ring terminal held on by a bolt. This wire actually runs into the channel and physically runs over the engine into the electric box on the top right of the vehicle.

If you meausre for 12Vdc+ on that cable, and you have power, then its something else, however, if you dont, your DDE is not getting power.

That pin that I described, not the wire, the exposed pin on the pedistal comes directly from the battery, fused onto that plate with an inline fuse, no power means dead car.

Fix the fuse/change the plate, and bob is your grandma's kitten....

Thank you Sir, you have been very helpful.:praise: My driver is on his way with that plate you referring to. Once he gets here, will fit and test. Will post reply today b4 I go home.

Well, hope you come right with this. From what Leonard is saying makes sense - the smoke is still strange, but as already said, maybe just a result of the starter motor getting a bit hot from cranking attempts - lot's of compression that it has to work against being a diesel.

Pleasure guys..

I will gladly help where I can.

I am very strong on the BMW electric side, as this is a hobby, but on the mechanical side, I know more then your average garden snail, but I am still a bit of a noob, so I shall help you where I can.

Hmm, this is all very strange! Hope you can get to the bottom of this. Get diagnostics done, then try and find out how the oil level dropped the way it did? Was it a leak or something else...
