Can Somebody Please Explain

These kind of protests is what happens when people have nothing to lose. Educated people won't behave like this because the have reputations and a board of directors to please. When you have nothing, then anything you do makes sense.

We could call it the African way or whatever, but in every country these things happen. In Greece there were mass protests, Egypt, UK had the riots (do you remember the purpose of those riots?).

These people are fighting for sanitation, electricity, jobs, roads... They are fighting to have the bare necessities of a decent life. Other countries protest for other things, but in SA we have a lot of poverty so before we see people marching against a war in Iraq or marching for a more green economy, they first gotta eat.

Here is a direct quote of the main gripe in Ratanda.

"We want Nersa [the National Energy Regulator of South Africa] here, to come tell us what is going on," said James Buthelezi, an organiser with the Ratanda Community Forum. "We want this cutting-off of power stopped, then we want to buy direct from Eskom. People here are too poor to pay so much."

The power gets cut if you do not pay, stupid.

Another quote from the Daily Maverick
“The people are protesting because of electricity prices. That is all,” said a member of the Ratanda Community Forum (RCF). Residents complained that as the provision and billing of electricity is linked to the municipality and other services such as water, their power is being cut off when they haven’t paid one of a number of bills. The RCF member explained that residents have received extortionately high bills, viewed as a municipality mistake, but have almost no recourse to resolve the issue with the council. Those who challenged their bills were told to pay or they would face a 10% fine and have their power cut on the 15th of the month. Residents want to be billed directly by Eskom so their electricity costs are separate from other council bills.

And who do they think put up the prices of electricity ?
