C250d and C220d vs 320d

Hi,

We know that the current F30 320d knocks the C220d for a six (140kw vs 125kw, same 400Nm). However, BMW does not have a direct competitor to the C250d (150kw, 500Nm) in SA (I think there is a 160kw 325d in Europe?). Also strangely, MB does not have a C350d in in its line-up (this motor lives in the GLC and almost all other of the bigger MB ranges) to take on the hard hitting 330d.

So, we have a curious situation of a 320d sitting between C220d and C250d (both cars have the same 2.1 litre motor) in performance, with the 330d sitting much higher up in the food chain with no competition from MB, or even Audi for that matter.

Which brings me to my question.

Would you rate the 320d, in the real world not on paper, as an inbetweener to the C220d and C250d, or a closer match to the C250d? Does that 10kw and 10Nm MB advantage, but with a poorer gearbox, really represent a credible threat to the BMW?

This would surely help in measuring one's confidence ahead of an unexpected TLGP.

(My neighbor has a C250d....)

These mercs start to rattle like crazy after a year or 2. BMW build quality is much better imo

I beg to differ, just bought a 6yr old C250cdi Coupe and I haven’t experienced any rattles. However, the Merc Diesel engine is a lot louder than the BM 2L diesel if that’s what you mean. Build quality compared to my ex 135i is on par while the interior on the Merc is streets ahead in my opinion. Probably not a fair reflection tho comparing a 1series interior to a C class. Just my 2 cents

not like the F30, the new C class is build much better than the F30. You can not compare the two

OP I’m fairly confident that the 320d slots in between the C220d and C250d in terms of performance.

The C250d really pulls well.

Let us know after you’ve tested:thumbs:

Hi. I think a 320d will match the C250 CDI in terms of performance. The Mercs are generally heavier than the BMW's and they are less sporty and responsive and heavier on fuel. They do however hold better resale value and an extra year of MP. THe BMW diesels are in a class of their own.

Had a quick friendly run from traffic light to traffic light before we encountered unusual traffic for a Sunday.

Not the least bit scientific by any means. It was a bit cold and I was just about at optimum mid point temp on my oil heat gauge. Anyway, the 320d was quicker off the line and had the edge for about a hundred metres (not exactly sure of distance). Then as the MB started picking up steam (I think that extra torque started kicking in), we hit the traffic.

I feel that if the road opened up further, the MB may have taken the lead.

Wife moved from an f30 320i to a w204 250 cdi

The c class out does the f30 at every turn, and in my view a better car.

Maintenance appears to be better priced so far, had to do a water pump the other day which cost me about 5k for oem part, coolant and a few other bits. Water pump on a f30 is over 12k just for the pump.

I am considering replacing my f01 with another 250 cdi. Purely from an economic perspective

Duel : Mercedes C 250 BlueTec (W205) vs BMW 320 d (F30)

Nice run bud.. but your suspicions are correct the Merc is slightly faster..

Driver ftw!
Thanks for the link.
My car is the LCI F30, so torque is 400Nm and 140kw (190ps), so would be marginally better.

Found this article from India, same spec cars as what we get in S.A. (I guess both these cars are even made in S.A. for export to India?)

www.autocarindia.com/car-news-amp/mercedes-c-250-d-vs-bmw-320d-comparison-401985

This sums it up nicely I think..

"The Bimmer is the only one here with launch control and uses the system to good effect to shoot from 0-100kph in 7.25 seconds.

The Merc takes 0.6 seconds more to the ton and only starts pulling away from the Bimmer upwards of 130kph."

My dad in law has a C320 CDI. Driven the car many times even to Durban. The gearbox is a little smoother than the E90 330d. It has good punch but nowhere near the 330d. Even the fuel consumption is about 1 to 1.5l per 100km heavier than the 330d. When I drive it I get get the feeling it doesn't like to be pushed too hard. it prefers high speed crusing instead of hard acceleration. Also, he has spent a fair bit of money on maintenance and fixing problems, therefore I think they are a less reliable as well.

For your Thesis question, experiment and results we are going to award you the BMW Fanatics Dr Of Science Honorary degree. :bravo:

Those Mercs diesels are nothing compared to the Beemas but they are very nice to drive and meaty.

Thanks for the comments guys.

It seems that there is a case for BMW S.A. to consider the 325d, since it will fill that large chunk of middle ground between the 320d and 330d. Will be interesting to see if it is considered in the next 3 series...

The 25d already lives in the X5 and does a very good job.
