Buying the wife a 1 Series

Hi Guys

Since I bought my 320d 2 months ago my wife has been nagging me for a 1 Series. Her budget is small so will be looking at the first models.

She prefers a 120d, but there is not allot for sale in her budget range, so we going to have to settle on a 118I or a 120I.

The thing is the fuel consumption, what do you guys get in normal driving conditions?

I would personally go for the 120i, even though the 120d would be more economical. I don't trust the earlier 120d as they might be prone to turbo failures.

I don't know, I'm on 140000kms (2010) on my 120d (original turbo), bmw has not touched the vehicle since MP expired and she still goes oh so well... BUT I have owned the car from new, and have ensured that all proper care/cool down/maintenance has been carried out, but when buying second hand you never know the previous owners regime... So, what price range are you looking at shopping around in?

WRT fuel economy, the 120d is amazing, far compared to the petrol in the 1 series class, my advice is to shop for that 120d, and get a full print out for all services/comments on the MP... with patience and a thorough search, there is no reason why you can't find what you're looking for :=):

Well i can not recall any thread where a single member complained about a 120d or i def missed it.

if you want economy go for the Diesel and in the light of petrol prices on the rise and constantly on the increase, you will def be glad later.

My 2 cents

Only have +- R100k :thumbdo:

Allot of neat petrol models for that price, but not much diesels. The problem is my wife sold har car yesterday. So only have this weekend to look for a car.

Take your time - don't rush. Rather rent a cheapie in the interim and find the perfect car to buy. This is a purchase you do not want to rush!!

a 118i has about 100kw which is more than enough ooomph, in my mind the 118i is a good car and fairly light on fuel.
i have a 116i and its amazing on fuel with the bigger 17" and 225 tyres still can get 530 odd kilometres in town.

Well, economically wise 120d would be a great choice. Anyway, think about it. Don't rush, mate. :) You'll find the car you want for your wife.

I agree with the guys above. the Diesel's are amazing

In saying this, i've owned a 118i before and the fuel consumption wasn't bad at all. If i'm not mistaken it was a 50 litre tank and i got well over 500kms with 17 inch rims driving in heavy traffic every morning.

Like some of the guys mentioned, take your time...you will find something good.

If you do however have your eye on a petrol, i doubt you will regret your purchase.

Thanks guys

Found a neat 120d with 133 000km on the clock, does not have any extras but it is in good condition and was in our price range. Will post pics soon.
