So this is what I got in the end

a 2003 530d.

She's a real treat to drive, smooth and comfy and beautifully kept inside and out. The best part was hearing the wifes complaints about bmws suddenly stop when she drove it and overtook a slow moving corsa. All of the torque!

Thanks all! I'll post more pics once I've got her to more picturesque places, I have a trip coming up soon with exactly this in mind.

There are some minor niggles, the sunroof goes backwards and forwards but not up (something I only discovered after taking delivery) and the key worked for a few days then just stopped unlocking and locking remotely. Small things. Also, the front bumper has a teeny bit of sag to it which I want to attend to as well.

The key is most annoying, as the battery no longer seems to be available from rs-online, but I understand I can replace it with a non rechargeable just fine?

Yeah, I just go to a watch place to get batteries. I know I get best reception for the key by the right rear fender (right C pillar). It could be just my car, but if you ever desperate, it might work for you too. :)

Also.. freakin nice car bud! Congratulations!

So as the old adage goes, you only get to join the club once the car goes up on a trailer. Driving home when the transmission light came on and car stopped going in to gear. Turned it off and on in neutral and managed to coax it to a garage where I am presently awaiting a tow to Leo Haese. I guess they'll diagnose and hand me a rather higher than I can stomach quote, so my question is who else can I take the car to for repair should it be my transmission?

Thanks all!

:=): I finally got to see the photo, the car looks great. Sorry to hear about the transmission fault you're having, hope everything works out.

Let's hope! I like this car, I don't want to have to flog it so early into the relationship!
E39's are great cars, I have never driven or been in a 530d but if the 530i was such a good E39 the 530d should be even better because its got a turbo :cartel:. I don't know if the engine on the E39 is the same as the E53 3.0d.
