i would keep looking, those dont sound very good. As I mentioned there are some really neglected examples of this great car, one just has to be patient and look around. Where are you based?

Krugersdorp, but I work in Centurion, so shlep between the two. It's a real shame about the neglect, because it seems like a great step forward from my battered old accent.
Is there a reliable dealer I can look at? When I went to bmw directly, they tried their absolute damndest to force a new model on me, but I don't want to be paying R400k for a car, no way, no how.

I can relate to what you say about the dealers :=):
The only thing I can say is to keep trawling the interweb and the car sites. Took me a few months to find mine. Try to stick to 2nd hand dealers that dont look dodgy if that helps any.

This is PTA North side I believe. not sure of your budget or this particular dealer. pics can also be disceiving as well but it does appear ok.

Is there anything especially fishy about this?
http://www.cars.co.za/for-sale/used...39-Gauteng-Johannesburg/1101858/#.VuFPktChrgA

Looking at it, aside from the interior screen, there really isn't much to seperate the e60 with the e39, and being as this is a late model e39, the kinks should be worked out. Would this be a terrible decision?

EDIT: Or for 100k more
http://www.cars.co.za/for-sale/used...At-e60-Gauteng-Pretoria/1369783/#.VuFRt9ChrgA

This one looks pretty okay actually, given the price-to-mileage.

e39's are built like tanks, very solid cars. So it would not be a mistake per say. However, I see this is Jule street in Malvern. I personally would stay away from there..... Ifyou wanted a good e39 530d, you missed out on ChefDJ's car on the forum. It was really beautiful, white with the Msport option which makes the e39 look special as well. Perhaps just check with him as to whether it has in fact been sold. Think so though.
The e60 looks pretty good. It is the normal look though not a Msport.

I know, I only realised after it was concluded what he was selling. And for helluva cheap too! ai.

I bought one a year ago and am very happy with it. Have had E39 528i, E39 540i and E39 530d before this as well as E90 330d and this is by far the most pleasurable to drive. The E39 530d comes very close as it is nearly the same but the E60 is livelier. Also uses less fuel at the same speed. I regularly see 16kms/l on the open road (tank to tank) Also, this car only does 1750 revs at 120km/h, which is probably why it is so economical. Also, seeing that the engine is barely turning over, it should last a very looong time. Mine is at 172k at the moment and is in very good condition. I would not be too worried about buying one with high kilos as they should last 300k/kms plus easily. I believe that the six speed auto in the E60 is better than the old five speed in the E39 and if you look after it and have it serviced by ZF it should also last the 300k/kms. Seeing that the revs are so low at 120 leads me to believe the turbo should also last longer than normally, especially with the vortex type of oil filter for the turbo which was fitted from 2003 when the E60 was released. In my opinion it is also a much nicer ride than the E90 pre lci. Go out and buy one, just make sure everything on it works as it should and that the previous owner looked after it. They are available and the pricing is very good.

My E39 gets me around 19km's to the litre on the open road.
Can't compare it like that. Different driving style.

Having a look at this tomorrow:
http://www.autotrader.co.za/used-ca...t-(e39)--fpa-ce52857747ab4084a560a990e3a68527

Is it priced too high? Anything else I should check on it?

110k is too high as you cannot insure it at that price, and you can surely find an E60 close to that price as well.

If you buy the E39 for 110k, and you drive it off the floor insured, and someone hits into you and writes it off, you are immediately out of pocket for about 10k, perhaps more.

That's a very good point, I'll see if I can get them to knock the price right down.

That e39 is way too much imo. Buy it now for 110 and go back tomorrow to the same dealer to trade in, I bet they won't even give you 50k!

Isn't that the case with any car at any dealer though? :p

Yours had a quarter of the mileage so then the price is justified.

I'm thinking about taking Spawn616's 530d. realistically, what can I expect to pay to keep one with that kind of mileage running reliably?

and probably loads of caffeine involved also to achieve that 19. even then I doubt that was achieved for 3 full tanks in a row.
my wife managed 19 (3 tanks) and I do 16 with a heavy foot on my 330d. the e39 530d will struggle to get 17 imo.

why do I mention 3 tanks...cause my wife's consumtion vary from 13 to 17 on her i20. same route same driver different petrol attendants. quoting the 17 is thus just not realistic (she get 14.7 average over 20k km)
