Buying a X5 --> Guidance needed

Hey guys.

So it's been mauling in my head for the past couple of months to get a bigger car and I would like to get it before going on leave in December.

Obviously I would like to stick to the BMW stable and the choices are X3 and X5 and preferably the 3.0d option. X5 would offer more than enough space.

Been harvesting the gum lately and it seems like I have the following options :

1. Trade the E90 325i on an E53 (2004 to 2006ish) shape X5 3.0d
with mileage from around 130,000km to 150,000km with maybe a small cash difference.

Example :

$T2eC16h,!y0E9s2S9LjbBS!N4cELgw~~48_20.JPG

2. Trade the E90 325i and the Caddy Bakkie and finance about R100k on an E70 (2008 ish) shape X5 3.0d with around 100,000km.

Example :

$T2eC16dHJGoFFvtvHUe)BRt,-Ov6qg~~48_20.JPG

I would prefer not to take option 2 because I intend to upgrade the house soon and wouldn't like to be stuck with a car payment...

Questions :

1. What would you do?
2. Should I considder something else (ex. Kia SPortage @ R230,000 with +/- 60,000km) ?

If option 1 is chosen, what should I be concerned about when looking at an E53 3.0d and what features should I aim for?

Obvious choices :

1. Full service history.
2. If large wheels are fitted the tyres must be in a very good condition.
3. Overall neat and clean with preferably no accident damage.

Any and all help and opinions will be appreciated.

:thumbs::thumbs:

There's not much diffs in the engines when comparing the two, with the E70 gaining about 13kw and 20nm on the E53....

I've been doing a bit of research myself.
I'm keeping the Z but looking at an X5

The only thing I can tell you based on my homework is that a lot of flaws picked up in the earlier models was rectified in the E70
Right now I'm concentrating on those and later.

If you are looking I know Vader can give you great deals in that department.
Maybe ask him if he can help.

I am currently working on this, trying to get the best possible covers for Rooi Willies trade-in's so we can move forward and find him the right car at the right price. I am looking for X5's with good margin so I can offer the biggest discount possible.

Will keep in touch Theo

I have had 2 X5's - E53 and E70 both 3.0d. If you can I would recommend that you go for the E70, a far superior vehicle to E53.
My 2 cents worth

Thanks bud.

I'm just trying to weigh up the R150k price diff and if it's really worth it, for me.

I have three X5, 2x E70 and 1x E53 3.0d with Sportspack
One thing is for sure.... the E53 circles around corners ten times sportier than the E70, no matter if the 4.8i xdrive Hamann or the 3.0d xdrive of my wife

If you want to maintain a sporty drive then it's the E53 especially with a limited budget!

BTW my E53 "Charcoal" 3.0d is still available and I would even consider a trade in

Hey Rolf

Thanks for the reply.

I've actually had a couple of looks at her and she looks VERY clean. Especially the interior.

My caddy bakkie is black and a B!TCH to keep clean so that worries me and also the light colored interior with the kids...

With the software and de-DPF what could be the expected fuel consumption?

My wife's E70 3.0d hovers around 10l/100km the E53 3.0d sits at round about 9l/100km

Nothing wrong with the X53 3.0d. Aslong as you get the facelift. Higher output and a lot of the niggles with the original were sorted out. But as with any aging luxury vehicle you will need to keep in mind that there are some expensive "servicable"items. The vibration damper will be on its way out around the time you will be buying. 7,000 part cost. One you have replaced all the stuff around it and labout 10K. The auto gear box are apparently time bombs. A set of tyres for the sport pack will be 15K.

But what a wonderful vehicle.

Sport seats are wonderbar. What is so good about the comfort seats?

I would go for the newer E70, though I think it lost some of its character. The E53 is always going to be the benchmark imo.

Heard about the air suspension giving problems on the earlier X53 models. But still a wonderful car, and I still want one too :(
