I just want to say...yoh...this car did +- 333'000 KM...thats amazing for how good it still looks.

@Zound are you guys also going to re-enforce the rear subframe?

Hey guys

These projects have a habit of evolving, to the point that you forget where it all began. So, to make sure we plant that stake firmly in the ground, have a peek at the equivalent of doing a 100m sprint with a back-pack and high heels :tiptoe:

So, while we wait to get the car back from TNT's house of metalcraft and for a courier van to arrive with a coilover-sized package, let's check out the scales and see how much weight we've managed to shed:

Heavyweights still remaining are front and rear window glass, door guts and a lot of wiring harness :cartel:

Out of curiosity, how much did you spend on the set, considering you say it's a "bang for your buck" purchase?

Would have loved to see Bilstein PSS 10's on this car.

Truly amazing coilovers with far superior damping. It is a pity that Bilstein do not include camber plates up front with their coilovers for the price they charge. I imagine had they done so, you would have gone with the PSS 10's?

I got a set of Turner Motorsports Camber plates for the front and rear camber bars to go with my PSS10's.

Would be interesting to compare when your car is setup and testing.

Hey JM52

This is a great question, because this is where our definition of “budget” gets a little interesting. Whilst we do have a very limited bag of cash to throw at this project, we want to spend in the right places, as opposed to going “entry level” on everything we use. We believe that a few thousand rand can make a lot of difference in this department, and were willing to throw a bit more money at this element.
The point of reference here would be the Maxtrac, which goes for about R7500. Strictly speaking these are more of a street package than true race kit, but many racers are using them quite happily.
We saw value in the BC Racing setup we chose for the following reasons, over a Maxtrac or similar:
1. Adjustability (compression & rebound), giving us the ability to fine tune the setup;
2. Inverted mono tube configuration - reduced unsprung mass, and moving the damper oil reservoir away from the heat of the brakes;
3. True coilover on the rear (once BC gets our bloody order right! :rage:)
4. Camber plates & pillowball mounts included
5. Shortened sway bar links included
6. Very customizable we were able to spec spring rates which were VERY different to standard. We took some advice from Vorshlag here.

So, based on all of that, we were happy to pay R23k for the set, this is certainly not a budget setup, but believe it will deliver a better result than anything else at this price point.

So, further to point 3 above,

OK guys. turns out we’re not just rookie Racecar builders, we’re also pretty thick at putting YouTube vids together. But I think we have it now, take a peek at this:

It makes sense. Though a suspension setup is primarily for handling purposes, it plays a huge role on the safety side of things too. You wouldn't want to skimp on a racing suit and go "entry level" on other safety features, as much as you wouldn't want to skimp on coilovers, but that's just my view:dunnoanymore: (as you mentioned that some guys are happy with Maxtrac and such). I bet you'll spend a substantial amount on tires as well. Maybe you'll spend a bit less on the brake system, unless if you go the carbon-composite route or something better than the OEM stuff. I think the engine work won't cost much as well, as there are numerous, economical ways to hack more power out from the motor. Lol I'd say the engine has the right to give you more power and the responsibility to stay reliable:eek:mgwaiting:

I stand to be corrected of course...:dunnoanymore:

Hhmmmm... Quoted the wrong post:hammerhead:

need to get an external mic that can clip on to your shirt or something, the volume changes every time you move your head or the camera moves in or out...

Lapel mic is what Rodga is talking about. You would need to run an external sound recorder or a wireless receiver plugged into your camera's mic point if it has one.

Nice progress. Budget is a relative concept, even for guys who go full balls. There's always a guy with deeper pockets. One question, did you guys consider ISC's? Out of almost 10 BMW's locally I would say 8 or 9 run them and very little issues so far.

Hey Guys!

Check out episode 6!

So what do you think of the build so far?:smilebounce:

Hi Pakimonster
I must admit the ISC’s weren’t on our radar at all - just had a look at the Ultra Racing site and it looks like awesome stuff! Hope we haven’t missed a trick here, but I have to say I’m very confident regarding the BC setup we’ve ordered. Have also had very reassuring feedback from Craig Ball who runs BC BRs on his M3-powered E36, where he is competitive in Class B.

Busy working on the ventilation system (race car gets hot inside!).

Any advice from those who have made up something before?

We've heard a lot of positive feedback from guys using the flexible PVC pipe and ducting that in via the drivers window...

Keen to read about any recommendations....
