broken valve cover stud.

Hi,
so i finally managed source all my parts for my manifold swap and decided that i was gonna tackle the valve cover gasket at the same time. Everything came off easily for the valve cover except for the one nut at the front of the valve cover. it was difficult to come out so i tried to turn it to tighten it a bit thinking it would loosen and come off easier but the stud broke off.
now my question is, is this stud screwed into the head and can be unscrewed and replaced or must i get some one to tap and drill for a new stud???

May post some pics of the problem, can't really say on the e36 - I am assuming this is on an e36?

What I do know is on the e46 the studs screw into the head and can be removed.

Make and model ? Sometimes a bit of Q20 and 15 minutes will work . Pic will help .

The studs all screw in.

Ask Mike at Definitive, he was telling me about a product the other day that might help you solve this.

can use an easy out tool.

drill hole in the middle of the stud and insert the easy out tool,depending on the size of the easy out ,use correct spanner and turn,if it doesnt move then try q20 or some lubricant.leave it so as it soaks in,try again.

or

drill as close to the size of hole and re tap the hole,have to drill dead centre then.

sorry if this seems complicared,but if ihad the piece in front of me would be easier to show that tell as i do this in my trade,hope it helps

Is the stud broken off level where it turns in ? If it sticks out you may be able to turn it out with a vice grips *- use a back and forwards motion .
@Colin , I think to drill and use easy out / tap on the engine at its angle will be a challenge for the technically challenged , also you are drilling a mild steel stud in alumimium , if the drill moves off centre ....shyte...:fencelook:

sorry,i know,but when you do it nearly everyday,comes natural,and maybe the person doing it is knows some one in the trade

hi, used a hack saw to cut across the piece of the stud that was protruding the fitted a flat head screw driver in the cut and unscrewed it with a little help of q20.
